Wanted to check out the dinosaur playground at Kim Keat Link, but the son had his own ideas, so I followed his lead.

We went to the Lego store at Compass One for the first time.

Since his induction into ClassDojo by his school teachers, we have since embarked on a rewards system at home. It came in most handy when I timed him for three minutes and motivated him to change from his pajamas into his uniform. Hey, I might as well make things work for me.

I have since realised how his appetite has grown exponentially. Just three years ago, he was contented with a $7 pack of animals sold at the neighborhood hardware store. Fast forward to today, in which he looked at the smaller models with disinterest and zeroed in on the largest dinosaur set.

A whopping $150!

Thank goodness I had set boundaries prior to our visit. No buying of toys today!

I did promise him that consistent garnering of three points per day to accumulate 150 points would yield him a Lego model. I quickly realised that the most I was willing to fork out for 150 points was $70 — incidentally the price of a triceratops skull. If he were to hanker after that $150 set, he would have to fork out the remaining $80 himself.

Second week of primary school education — and I have realised that the most important lesson I can impart him is diminishing his urges (as opposed to securing stellar grades).

There is no end to parenting, isn’t it?

Do you think your points/$ exchange rate will float or will you maintain a fixed peg?

reply

He's bamboozling the kid for some time before introducing the point/sat rate.

reply

Haha

Bamboozling is the right word. I’m delaying the awarding of points as much as I can!

I think he already memorised the point/sat rate by heart

reply

Lol!

Fixed peg

Next month is Chinese New Year, so he will probably receive that $150 bucks easy peasy. But it’s no good that he gets new toys so easily — especially when his Xmas toys are already languishing at one corner — best for me to enforce that he must earn 150 points before I fork out that $70 bucks
