Fantastic !
It is very impressive to see it in action up close.
We got that kind of control on the Douro River too, for boats going up and down dams. But on a way smaller scale, that canal is seriously impressive.
This is the original, failed attempt to build the canal by the guy who built the Suez Canal.
Really cool photos! Thanks for sharing.
Every time the Panama Canal gets mentioned, it reminds me of the Panama Canal Operation in The Three-Body Problem.
@k00b replied that first thing this morning!
I guess that plot line was quite something. My jaw dropped when I first heard it in the audiobook, then dropped again when I saw the episode on the Netflix series.
I heard my first howler monkey.
They're cool. We went on a howler monkey excursion in Belize.
That sounds great. The first time I heard one in Costa Rica I thought it was a roaring tiger.
The unfortunate thing about the excursion is that you pretty much only see butts, since they're in the trees and you're on the ground.
Same here. I only saw the occasional monkey ass the whole trip.
Fascinating. What kind of boat are you on?

Hey Tom! It's a smaller, panamax size cruise ship.
They didn't rename that the America Canal yet?
What is Trump even doing?
No, but I did see some workers getting ready to put up new signs - The Trump Canal & Casino
Riverboat gambling along the Canal.
I've only been through canal locks around London. That must be awesome!
I have never done anything like this. The scale of the project is incredible. The dockworkers seem to really enjoy their work, too.
Is bet it's the best paid jobs and benefits in the region.
US hegemony over the Americas leaves millions in poverty.
$188,000 for the ship to cross. Apparently it's cheaper since we're not going through to the pacific. How many sats is that?
Is that just because of the ships size? Or is it flat rate for ships of all sizes?
Apparently the price is set using all kinds of factors. Ship's size, weight, type of cargo, time of day, time of year. I think the record was like 4 million bucks for a Japanese ship that wanted to skip to the front of the line during covid. Kind of like paying a big transaction fee to get it done quickly 😀
Interesting. Seems like a good incentive model for ships who need to get where they’re headed in a hurry.
Yes. The costs seem all over the map and they're tough to predict. The ship I am on estimated a price of close to half a million dollars. 188k is apparently a bargain.
Does that money go to Panama or the US?
I'm not sure. Panama owns the canal, but I think various entities are involved in running it.
what contraband are you smuggling?
I would tell you, but then ...
you would have to kill grayruby
I can read the tea leaves
Whenever I think of the Panama Canal I can’t help but think about Three Body Problem.
Oh man. Now I'm scared. Daylight come and me wanna go home.
Beetlejuice
lol
Where is your final destination?
We're just turning around and then heading northwest through the caribbean
DOPE!
Let us know if it's as trafficked and busy as it seems from afar
Not many ships. I guess early Sunday morning isn't too busy.
Gatun Lake
From which company you bought your ship? Paid in sats?
