As long as bitcoin is being moved, whether on-chain or via lightning, individuals are using it and everything is fine. Even with mass adoption, I expect and imagine that on-chain transactions will be limited to large balance transfers for opening LN channels. If usage is what matters, then the amount of sats moved on the lightning network is what really counts.
