Let's be real for a second. Since the halving, I've seen a lot of small miners throwing in the towel. Difficulty is up, rewards are down, and unless you're sitting on free energy, the ROI math looks grim on a spreadsheet.
But I think we're measuring success wrong.
If you're home mining purely for profit in 2024/2025, you're probably playing a losing game against industrial giants. They have economies of scale we can't touch. So why are so many of us still running ASICs in the garage?
I've been crunching the numbers on my own setup, and I realized the value isn't just in the sats mined. It's in the energy sovereignty and heat reuse.
- Heat Offset: In winter, my miner pays for itself by offsetting electric heating costs. Suddenly, the effective energy cost drops significantly.
- Grid Stress Testing: Running a miner forces you to understand your home's electrical capacity. Upgraded breakers, learned about load balancing, etc. That knowledge is valuable.
- Network Security: It sounds cliché, but knowing you're personally securing even a tiny fraction of the hashrate feels different than just buying BTC. You're part of the infrastructure.
I'm not saying everyone should rush out and buy an S19. Noise, heat, and power costs are real barriers. But if you treat mining as a hobby that subsidizes itself rather than a business expecting 10x returns, the mindset shifts.
Curious about the community here: What's your break-even point? Are you mining for profit, or are you in it for the sovereignty/learning aspect?
Would love to hear how others are justifying the power bill in this difficulty environment.
Keep hashing. ⛏️
How does mining in your garage offset your heating costs in the winter? Do you pay to heat your garage?
Sharp question. You're absolutely right—heating an unused garage is just burning money.
To clarify: I built a simple ducting setup to divert the exhaust air from the miner into my basement workshop, which is connected to the house's insulation. It's not 100% efficient, obviously, but it takes the edge off the main heater during the coldest weeks.
If I were just warming the garage itself, you'd be right—it would be pointless. Thanks for keeping me honest though, details matter! 🫡
