You're going to be dealing with people getting ready to die. Many will be elderly, and a lot will have cognitive decline or full blown dementia. Those who are younger will be suffering from depression and facing mortality too early. It's a grind and there's no medal or "great job" at the end of the day. You do it to help thanklessly. You want to make sure you have a recovery system for yourself mentally or you're going to burn out quickly from how hard it is.

Sounds about right. Had a friend who did it for a summer internship / volunteering opportunity (forgot if she got paid.) But this is pretty much what she said about it too, and it was a tough adjustment.
