Why DNS Is Broken & How Bitcoin Replaces It – Mike Carson
https://youtu.be/bgEXk6mtiso

Spaces can't replace DNS for loading google.com tomorrow, but it can replace DNS dependencies for identity, usernames, payment handles, and certificate needs in Bitcoin native and decentralized ecosystems (Nostr, Lightning, etc.). Many in the Bitcoin space see it as part of the path to fixing centralized naming, especially since Bitcoin already has unmatched security and finality.

If you're deep in Bitcoin/Nostr, check out spacesprotocol.org or their docs for running a resolver or claiming a Space. It's very much a cypherpunk take on naming.

The networks need to have separate fates. BitDNS users might be completely liberal about adding any large data features since relatively few domain registrars are needed, while Bitcoin users might get increasingly tyrannical about limiting the size of the chain so it's easy for lots of users and small devices.

This "spaces" scam is by NOT what bitdns did. I am old enough to know and tested the defunct Namecoin NMC that was a good intention of decentralizing DNS.

But these "spaces" are just another scam. Don't let them fool you.
They even used a catchy title for this post, showing the level of scam they are willing to do.
You have been warned.

Namecoin failed because of distribution issues, among other reasons: https://www.cs.princeton.edu/~arvindn/publications/namespaces.pdf

Spaces uses approx. 60 bytes, very minimal on chain footprint. Compatible with core, knots, bip110, etc. Very tiny without any changes needed to Bitcoin.

Satoshi would approve!

No. Is a scam.

I agree DNS is a scam, Spaces on Bitcoin is much needed.

reply

LOL don't you see the stupidity? spaces still run on DNS. So no big deal.

reply

Founder here. Why do you call it a scam? We've presented at many Bitdevs as well as TABConf, no one there called it a scam. Keyan told me himself that our talk at TABConf was great and the protocol was designed in a thoughtful way.

reply

Just by using these words "bitcoin replaces DNS" prove the level of scam, trying to fool people.
Is really childish to think that DNS as it is today can be replaced. You are just selling snake oil here.

Call it whatever you like but not "we will replace DNS". That's bullshit.

reply

I never said bitcoin replaces DNS. Before judging it as a scam I'd appreciate it if you knew more about the protocol first, you can read about it here: https://spacesprotocol.org/
We specifically made it cypherpunk. No separate blockchain, no separate token, no premine, no foundation...

reply

I've read the papers. As I said call it whatever you like, but don't come to me with this bullshit snake oil about DNS.
These space have nothing to do with "replacing" DNS. Is just a space. That's it. And is useless.
