There's a quote from The Once and Future King:

Education is experience, and the essence of experience is self-reliance.

Maybe the cure for being an idiot actually is being an idiot...as long as you must bear the consequences of your own idiocy.

I view our unwillingness to let people die as a natural consequence of their own actions as an externality imposed by moral conscience that shapes much of how we should think about public policy.

Honestly all the examples in the article are pretty low grade. Not even a 4-digit loss, and no suicides. They should consider it a pretty inexpensive lesson all things considered.

For sure. Although, if I had lost $600 as an undergrad, it would have taken me years to dig out of that financial hole.

I spent $2800 on a trip to Europe when I was 20 and it felt like I had spent a million dollars. Haha

Yes. Exchange rate was probably pretty similar to now. That was before the Euro so I had to carry like 5 different currencies.
