I never got what was so hard about avoiding address re-use. All except the dumbest earliest wallets avoided reuse by default.

What Bitcoin seems to do best is to get people to over-extend themselves technically and then cut them down.

I suspect most of it has to do with exchanges and people wanting to post a stable donation address on a website.

Exchanges tend to make it a pain to withdraw to new addresses (at least the centralized exchanges I've played around with do this: you have to go through a lot of steps to add a new address when you want to withdraw, but they usually save your old and address and make it easy to use again).

If you want to accept bitcoin donations on a website, it's still not super easy (lightning addresses are a big help as are BOLT 12 addresses). But if you want to just post a donation address, it's stupid easy to put a single bitcoin address there and repeatedly receive. It's a bad idea, but people like easy.
