No surprise, instead of returning the money stolen by Congress to pay for other stuff, the debate is instead who should get cut to keep Social Security solvent. It's pretty much a fox guarding the hen house situation.

The problem is that there’s no way to just return the money that Congress spent. They’d have to steal more from all of us.
NOBODY.
Abolish tomorrow. No refunds.
Problem solved.
Yeah well, my 41 years of working and paying in sez Fuck That, I'm taking my share.
you didn't pay in shit, you got robbed -> and the thief got away. Sorry?
I definitely got robbed if the government doesn't keep it's end of the contract, yes, I agree on that point. But it's not like there was choice. Payroll tax evasion gets you 5 years easy.
I don't think the non-choice in that matters. You rode a shitcoin wave in a scammy system, where you (I assume you're retired/retireing here) are now the parasite extracting value from everyone else. #1468968
I understand retirees and boomers don't have a choice, and few of them had any hand in making this system, but I don't think it matters. You did the deed, you earned the filthy money. AT LEAST feel bad about it, apologize and repent every time that check comes through the mail.
And no, the government certainly is keeping its end of the contract. That's the problem; it should stop, IMMEDIATELY.
First off, I'm not a parasite. I paid into a system that is supposed to provide a basic living level on the back end as a senior. So I'm not taking anything new; mathematically, I'm getting less back than I paid in. So I'm actually a donor to other services people like you are benefitting from for free. If anyone is a parasite, you would fit that definition being younger until you reach the same point as me.
Second, my income was fair earned, not filthy. And comments to make it sound different don't change the facts. You can be pissed all you want about my success and now that there's another billion in the population it's less opportunity for you, but it doesn't change my work ethic.
Third, I'm not apologizing for anything. I'm in a 28% tax bracket. So, the whining about how I'm stealing from the system can simply fuck off and work harder. Then you can be taxed just as much.
I'm not surprised by the attitude. It's classic "young wanting everything up front and screw the rest." Unfortunately, those who did work and paid in aren't rolling over quietly to make room for you.
Work harder and compete instead of whining about how unfair it is. It might help not to drink so many gourmet coffee drinks every day and get a personal coffeemaker for home.
or you can just go learn how the system works and worked... you didn't "pay in" anything... you got stolen a small portion, and you're getting back more goodies than you gave up... the entire thing is parasitic, and you're on the receiving end.
Have fun
