Three weeks after the damming report that found Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick committed 25 different ethics violations of the 27 counts levied against her. What makes this even more significant is that the Ethics Committee is the only one where the number of Republicans and Democrats is equal. With only 10 Members total, and for anything to move out of the Committee, that means there has to be bipartisan support to do so.

In the 59-page report, Cherfilus-McCormick was not only hit with the alleged campaign finance violations, but committee investigators also accused her of spending the funds on luxury goods, including jewelry from Tiffany & Co., a Tesla, designer clothing, high-end hotels, and a cruise. Before the sanctions hearing today, the Committee's internal memo stated

"The 25 violations at issue here are very serious standing on their own," the committee's counsel said in a memorandum ahead of Tuesday's hearing. "The scope and continuous nature of the conduct, as well as Respondent's failure to take responsibility for wrongdoing, may be considered as aggravating factors."

The sanctions hearing will begin at 2 p.m. EST and can be watched live here. This is an extremely rare event for a House Ethics Hearing to be livestreamed, but it goes to show how Members are getting fed up with how some are acting, plus they want to show the American people they are doing something about it.

The Committee has a few options for what it can recommend: censure, fines, a reprimand, or other measures, including removal from committee assignments, a reduction in seniority, or a requirement to apologize. There is a growing bipartisan movement hoping the Committee recommends expulsion, and even Democrats have come out saying they would support expulsion even if the Ethics Committee does not recommend it.

Cherfilus-McCormick has repeatedly said she would not resign or step down, even as pressure has ramped up within her party. It will be interesting to see how House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries handles this. He has been one of the biggest outspoken people on calling the Trump Admin riddled with corruption, but he has been relatively quiet when it comes to his own Member getting indicted by a grand jury for money laundering COVID funds.
