Nooooo this is just the internal House ethics enforcement. The barrier is lower than in a criminal case. She is still facing trial with the DOJ.

The reason that she did this was that once she resigned, the House Ethics Committee won't act upon the findings anymore, like they were planning to. The House does not have the ability to fine her or sanction her, so she's just dodging, temporarily, any sort of punishment.

It seems like politicians usually get away with this stuff though.

Not many get hit with Federal Charges though... she did and the few I can think of that have went to jail or pleaded out

I guess the plea option muddies the waters since those terms aren’t always disclosed
