People continuously finding solutions to problems that don't exist

eg coinjoin, spark, ecash, sidechains, shitcoins

The best UX

If it's a real lightning wallet, I usually can't just create a wallet and start receiving small payments.

Now, many have fixed this with ecash (Zeus) or with Spark (Wallet of Satoshi) or Liquid (Aqua).

But it is still in my mind a place of friction. I'm not sure if my preference is for lightning wallets just require that users start with a minimum balance, or if the graduated method is better.

That way of thinking comes from fiat mindset. Is soooo deep inside people brains that will take another 50 years to go away.

That's why I always said that we should focus more on new users education and not pushing dumb solutions like

and instead explain:

  • what is money and how it works
  • cash flows, payment channels, vaults
  • small technicalities not deep understanding how bitcoin apps code is written, but justt basic functionalities.

We need smart people to use Bitcoin not chimps with AK-47

I think you're right that we still think about bitcoin from the perspective of the money we all grew up with. But I'm not sure that it's such a thing that we can change it easily in people's minds. It's pretty deep in our culture.

One of the most natural ways I have of telling others about bitcoin is sending them some. For onchain bitcoin, it used to be easy: just send them some sats. But now, the smallest amount I'm willing to send onchain is usually more than I want to spend to teach someone about bitcoin.

So Lightning.

If you meet a normal person who has never had a bitcoin wallet before and in the course of conversation Bitcoin comes up and they seem interested, how would you go about sending them some sats?

two weeks. that's enough for a normie to start learning WITHOUT starting with a simple tx using LN.

Why would you have to start with a normie by sending a test payment over LN?
Start by explaining WHY Bitcoin and understand first how bitcoin will fuck the fiat system. Later come the practice.
A normie that start straight away using LN will NEVER understand or know the basics of bitcoin onchain and those are the most important.

If you start with a normie using blindly an app that only show some numbers, first thing they will ask will be: how can I get my money back from this? how can I get dollars or whatever other fiat ? That normie is a failed bitcoiner already.
