This is a pretty great story. Don't feel like you failed. People have weird feelings about bitcoin and probably the best thing any of us can do is just to ask if we can donate it/spend it at places.

Even if people don't respond positively, it puts the idea out there that there are people who 

 use bitcoin for things. And that's pretty cool!
