USA has never been open to an FTA with NZ but we achieved our FTA with China over 20 years ago and ever since NZ trade with China has boomed and trade with USA has stagnated- just like most of the world today trade with China is far more important than trade with USA.

New Zealand trades with whomever it is able to- it is USA dictating to other nations who they can and cannot trade with because USA cannot compete with China and wants to cling to its petrodollar as long as it can because without the petrodollar USA will be insolvent and humiliated.
USA has admitted its no longer competitive in terms of trade by trying to introduce tariffs and sanctions, which all failed, and so is now using military aggression in a last ditch attempt to preserve the dying petrodollar.
