When I was little, I used to play this game called Lord of the Realms 2. You were some kind of medieval lord and you managed a province, allocating your peasants to shepherding or blacksmithing or woodchopping. It was a turn based game and every once in a while when your turn started, you would get a little pop up where a David Attenborough sounding voice told you about some event: a harsh winter or a bumper crop of wheat. One of the things he would say was that the plague was visiting your province: "Death stalks the land" was how the game phrased it.

As I'm getting older, I keep hearing this high-class sounding English guy saying "Death stalks the land" -- when I learn that someone is sick or has passed, it just sounds again in my mind.

It's hard not to scurry around like a little mouse, trying to dodge Death's malevolent gaze. But I remind myself that it does no good to live like a mouse.
