I just recently stumbled across this guy's videos and I'm hooked. He thinks through some of these big questions so clearly and carefully and explains really important scientific principles well.

Mass extinctions may explain why intelligent life is rare in the universe. On many worlds catastrophes may wipe out complex life, or sterilize the planet, preventing the evolution of intelligence.
We may have gotten incredibly lucky to have a planet that remained habitable for 4.5 billion years.
I call this the Charmed Life Hypothesis, and it’s one of the most terrifying explanations for why we haven’t made contact with aliens.
It's a counterintuitive idea because necessarily most of the evidence in favor of it can't be found by studying Earth's history, or we wouldn't be here. Earth's history shows an unbroken period of habitability extending back 4 billion years... but it could hardly be otherwise, or we wouldn't be here to see it. Numerous nonlethal mass extinction events- the asteroid impact that killed the dinosaurs, the Permo-Triassic extinction, Snowball Earth glaciations- failed to wipe out complex life, but this may be survivorship bias; only on planets where life survives the gauntlet of mass extinctions can intelligence emerge to study its history.

Climate Change is real.

reply

Two things might be true at the same time: climate change is real and climate change is a scam

reply

A third thing can also be true, "Climate change is real" is a dumb obvious statement that tells us nothing useful.

reply

Not true.
You have completely missed the point I was making because it does not suit your absurd Libertarian death cult climate change denial.
Climate change deniers are the perfect example of the selfish and deluded nonsense that potentially leads to mass extinction events.
We are currently under going massive extinctions of species and human extinction may be the end result.
Climate change is real but humans are exceedingly stupid and follow irrational ideologies where it serves their selfish biases despite ultimately endangering their own survival.

reply

Since you only made one short asinine statement, it's really not my fault for missing your point

reply

My statement and its meaning should be perfectly clear when put in context as a direct response to your post...unless you are completely blinded by climate change denial bias...which sadly many if not most Libertarians seem to be...

reply

Well, neither of us denied climate change and the video supports the idea of a current mass extinction, so I don't know why you've got your panties in a twist.

reply

Climate change denial is a perfect example of an 'intelligent' life causing mass extinction of other species and potentially precipitating its own extinction.
The hostile response my simple comment drew says it all.
For example calling it asinine when it is in fact entirely relevant to your post, and the climate change denial frequently expressed here on Stacker News.
Climate change deniers do rather deserve, in my opinion, all the scorn and rebuke that can be heaped upon them- they are the worst example of an allegedly intelligent life form and its selfishness and self destructive tendencies.
If I could I would exile them all to a very low lying atoll with one palm tree for shade and no way out.
