One of the things I most often hear when pitching Stacker News is not liking that it's siloed off from nostr. That's not entirely accurate but I get the point.

You can sign in with your nostr ID and write posts to nostr. You cannot, however, read notes here or the replies to your posts that were written on nostr. Mostly that makes sense because nostr is outside of the Stacker News rewards system and generally isn't pay to post. Making Stacker News a read client would be like giving everyone infinite freebies.

Still, I was wondering about a few ideas that would further integrate Stacker News with nostr and possibly make it more attractive to a bunch of plebs.

Crosspost replies to posts tooCrosspost replies to posts too

When a Stacker News post goes out as a note, is it possible to also add the replies to the post as replies to the note? Obviously, this only applies to replies from stackers who have opted in to cross-posting to nostr.

This would be a cool way to export entire discussion threads to nostr.

Retain zap splits from nostr zapsRetain zap splits from nostr zaps

This one might be more pie in the sky.

If one of my posts gets zapped on nostr, those sats go to me entirely and bypass the rewards pool and territories. Would it be possible to embed the SN zap splits into the note?

Why would anyone want that? Glad you asked. Those sats could then be counted towards your post's visibility and ranking for the purposes of rewards (should top posts be included in rewards in the future). The zap could just be treated like a zap from @anon.

Taking this a step further, if I were to zap one of those notes from my SN linked npub, could that be counted towards my Stacker News zapping?

Now getting real nuts with it, could new SN accounts be spun up for zaps from npubs that had no associated SN account? That would mean nostriches could find themselves earning SN rewards, without even realizing they were part of it. They wouldn't find that out, though, until they tried Stacker News and saw their stack waiting for them.

Read nostr replies from stackersRead nostr replies from stackers

This idea is similar to the last one, just for replies. Could replies made on nostr to posts made on Stacker News be added to the comments on Stacker News?

Obviously, that would require the reply is made by an npub with an associated SN account. As above, that could either mean only doing it for npubs with pre-existing SN accounts or generating SN accounts for any npub that replies.

What about pay to post? These replies would have to be treated as freebies, unless it's possible to preserve the reply fees and splits in the note (which would be very cool). If it is, a nostrich trying SN for the first time could find a bunch of their replies here already along with any zaps and rewards they had earned.

I recognize that even if some of these ideas are possible, they would probably take a lot of work and might not be top priorities. I have no problem with that. I'm mostly interested in the possibility space around this topic because it is a hang up for many people who I think would be highly additive to the discourse here.

I try to post my daily SN items on nostr (and pubky 😂).

Hopefully that helps

Manually or using the cross-posting feature?

reply

Manually I can’t get the cross posting to work on mobile and I use SN 95% on mobile.

reply

I don't think it works on mobile for anyone

reply

Do you use it on desktop? Auto cross post?

reply

Yeah, I set it up back when they introduced the feature and it's been pretty stable the whole time.

My pitch to nostr users for a while was that they may as well crosspost from SN because they'll get sats here at no extra effort.

I thought it would be an easier sell

I would like to see that integration but I don’t want to see SN as a nostr client – I know that is not what you proposed, just take advantage of it.

I feel exactly the same way

Nice ideas but, eh, isn't Nostr dying??

Nostr is fine imo. I'm having a good time there. You need to follow the right people. And there are things like divine that are actually gaining some traction

reply

My feeling is that the whole space is in an attention lull but lots of cool stuff is still being built and eventually activity will pick up.

reply

As a standalone social media platform, yes. The technology is not dying though.

I really like the idea of bringing the conversations closer together instead of keeping them separate. Even simple reply syncing would make it feel much more connected and could introduce a lot more people to Stacker News naturally.
