pull down to refresh

Yep, it's right. After a thrilling match we beat the reigning Champions and added a second star to the badge.

My day started early for a Sunday. I got up around 8 AM as we had friends coming. All the shopping, drinks and food, was done the day before to focus on getting the house ready. Soon after, 9 AM, one of the broadcasters in Spain commenced the special program for the Final's Day. Long day for them too, it was good to build up the environment.

We spent the morning tiding up the house and around 2 PM, the barbecue was on. Friends arrived on time to drink a few beers and take a bath in the swimming pool.

As important as the meal, is the post-meal where we could talk for 3-4 hours just sitting in the patio, enjoying the afternoon, no rush at all. Then a coffee and some sweets. The Final was getting closer. Not much alcohol at that time as the outcome was to stay bright.

Some friends arrive just on time to go inside and sit in the leaving room. 3 hours left and we had some images from the stadium. A great scenery for the Final. We know that there were more Argentinians than Spanish, no worries there. In the pitch, we were even.

90 minutes for the Final and the show commenced. Heart beat raised a bit. We were getting closer. Line ups were public. Spain did not move anything . Same players than in the previous round. Good sign. In the other side, Scaloni made some changes. Another good sign , he's got doubts.

60 minutes to go and players came out for warming up. We are almost there. TV presenters and old players seem confident . We know what we need to do. Stay calmed , grab the ball and seek for spaces. Argentina is a tough one but we can make it.

15 minutes to 9 PM(here in Spain). I just want this to start.

5 minutes to go. National anthems. Spanish one has not got lyrics but we sing it "lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo....". Argentinians sing it loud.

9:00 Pm. Kick off. Here we go!

We are moving the ball as expected. Lamine starts sharp and within 2 minutes has shot already. Good start. However, Messi almost caught a ball in a fast transition. 10 years ago, it would have been a problem, but, at 39, it is the only thing he's missing: speed. Unai was faster and sent the ball away.

Argentinian showed their belligerent style quick. Olmo received a foul from Mac Allister. Just foul, no cards. Ok no worries, we know that it would happen . Our players remain focus on the task. 100% sure it has been discussed in the tactical sessions.

Rodri was at the centre of Spain's play, moving the ball one side to the other. First cooling break and Spain stayed the same. Oyarzabal shot from outside of the box and Dibu Martinez saved it easily. Then Cucurella tried too but it was not on target. Right before of half time, Lisandro got a yellow card as he stopped Oyarzabal when he tried to run.

Half time. Now we get some beers and wine, snacks with Spanish omelette, cheese, seafood, mojama (hahaha search for it!!). Time to talk as half time show is on. I am not used to these of kinds of things to be honest. Let's focus on the match, please!!!

Just 1 minute of the second half and Baena has shot again, though easy for Martinez. More of argentina's "other football". Paredes hit Rodri in the back without the ball near, and then push Olmo . He gets a yellow card.

Within the following 10 minutes, we managed to pass the ball to the box twice with fast transitions, but final decisions were not good. Olmo shots again and Dibu struggles to save it and send it to a corner kick.

Lamine reaches the end line , crosses the ball and Ferran, that had just come out of the bench, head the ball to Dibu's hands. Another chance and still 0-0.

15 minutes to the end of the match and Cubarsi, what a player, shots. Dibu , again, saves it. 19 year old as Lamine. What a future ahead!

Then, an important moment, Enzo gets a yellow card due to protesting a referee's decision at 82 minutes.

We are reaching the end of the match and Simeone shots easy, so Unai saves it. First shot for Argentina in the match!

At 92 minutes, Enzo hits Cubarsi in the middle of the pitch and gets the second yellow card. He is sent off.

At the very last minute, Lamine shots a free quick and Dibu flies to save the goal.

We move to the extra time. Please I do not want this to end in a penalty shoot out. We need to score. 12 shots on target and no goals. We need to score.

Five minutes into the extra time and Spain, Nico Williams , scores. The referee disallowed it due to a foul??? I can't believe it. Nothing has happened. Old ghosts from our match against South Korea, in 2002, come back.

It does not matter. We have more football than them. Let's keep going. Merino almost heads a ball to become a hero again.

Half time of the extra time. Difficult to relax now. We are confident but we are running out of time.

We are closer to that magic 116 minute when , back in 2010, Iniesta scored his goal to gave us the first World Cup. Will it be the same this time?

Zubimendi opens to Lamine, who passes to Porro. From the left corner of the box, crosses the ball to the other side. It seems that is going too long but Nico Williams catches and heads the ball back to the middle of the box. Ferran appears there, no Argentinian defenders close and, with 47 million Spanish people pushing him, ,sent the ball to the net.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!

We did the hardest part. We score. We know what happened to Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland and England. It's time to avoid coming close to our area. But they are going to try it.

VAMOS ESPAÑA, COÑO!!!!!

Ferran scores again, but he was slightly offside. Keep going. 7 minutes left to become World Champions. An entire country is pushing . Some of my friends cannot cope with it and are out in the garden. They do not want to watch it.

One minute to the 120, Messi takes the ball and pass it to the box, Simeone crosses the ball and Eric García sends it to a corner kick . Sweatings....

Messi throws the corner kick, a Spanish defender sends it to corner again. More sweatings...

Messi, again, throws the corner, the ball reaches Simeone, alone in the middle of the box, my heart stops for a second...... but the ball goes above the bar.

VAMOS!!

Referee adds 5 minutes to the second half of the extra time. Argentina takes a foul in the middle of the pitch. Dibu sends the ball to the box but no one can reach it.

And the referee whistles for the last time.

WE ARE WORLD CHAMPIONS !!!!!

Joy, singing and bottle of cava to celebrate!! We have done it again! This is a team not a squad and we have shown it again.

It's been a long day . It's almost 3 AM when I go to bed. But I am happy. Spain is happy tonight.

We are World Champions for 4 long years.

They dominated. I was a bit worried for you that Argentina would steal it from them in penalties.

reply

Me too. At some point, I thought we were going to end up in penalty shootout. Looking how his goalkeeper was playing , I was sure that we would have lost. Fortunately, Ferran scored !

reply

Argentina's keeper was awesome.

reply

Definitely he was! On top of that if we had reached the penalties, players would have been thinking about all opportunities missed and that would have been an advantage for the Argentina.

Anyway, we won it. It's just incredible that I have been able to watch Spain winning two World Cups.
