Even though there aren't a ton of tools for looking back at the history of coins you may receive, you can do some amount of sleuthing just using something like mempool.space (I don't recommend doing this unless you take some privacy precautions like using tor -- it's probably best to host your own instance connected to your own node if you want to be looking up utxos connected to your personal stack).

But I think there have only been one or two times where I tried to trace the history of a utxo I received -- and I didn't feel like I learned very much useful info.

Have you ever tried this?

I have done in the past.

It's interesting to look at and guess who may have had it before. I tried once to go back to its initial coinbase TX but it was taking too long.

Yes, I keep my very own Sankey of it

to be honest when I tried to follow the path, when I started in bitcoin, I realized that is interesting at the same time that is boring. it’s cool see how the utxo are break or consolidate into another ones, but without faces just transactions with no faces, we can’t know the history, just presume (specially when it has no “financial information”)

I had a similar experience. everything takes time, and most of the time, it's not worth the time to go hunting for onchain details. Especially since what you think you know turns into a probability pretty quickly.

it’s cool when you found a interesting link or a funny short message, but it’s just that and very rare to find it in your transaction chain.

Btw I go even further and look up any address someone gives me before I send to it, then bitch at them to generate a new one if they already received payments on it.

OXT was a really cool tool for this, I'd like to use AI to rebuild it as a BTCPay plugin or something.

Fun fact: WabiSabi coinjoins would take 30 minutes to load on OXT and crash your browser.

I used to use OXT and remember a similar crashing experience.

Phoenix only shows one year history

Wtf, why? I've never noticed this because my channels don't survive for a year, and I delete the seed every time I fund a new one.

a few times, yeah. Can be pretty scary, but whenever I end up in weird places I also quite often doubt that I did the chainanalytics well

didn't feel like I learned very much useful info.
