We are proud to announce that Wasabi Wallet v2.8.1 is out. It sets a major milestone which took more than a year to achieve: to make Wasabi unstoppable.
Yes, Wasabi Wallet is unstoppable now. This is the result not only of a long, complete redesign but, even more important, of a lesson learnt from the Samourai failure. One day we all woke up with the news about the Samourai case, and what shocked me the most, apart from the human perspective, was witnessing how an open source software project can die. I remember reading users requesting support because their wallet showed them a 0 btc balance, the fear, the ignorance reigning in most of them about what that 0 meant — something I don't want Wasabi users to ever go through.
The latest version can not only work with nothing more than your own node but can also work with just the Bitcoin P2P network. Coordinators form a long chain of fallbacks, releases are distributed automatically thanks to Nostr, and even if GitHub cancels our subscription and blocks the project repo, nothing happens because Wasabi can find the releases wherever we put them.
We could enumerate features — there are lots of them — but unstoppability is the one that we would like to highlight today.

This sounds like something solved DECADES ago via bittorrent.

It is not a reinvention, the distribution mechanism contemplates the possibility of using bittorrent, the difference is that the wallet detects there is a new version because it is published in nostr and it can inform the user. In case the protocol used is http, it can also download it and verify the authenticity automatically.
Oohh, so the download does not even happen via Nostr? Nostr is just used for keeping track of versions. What are the Coordinators forming a long chain of fallbacks of then? The download itself?
It means that there are currently 7 coordinators maintained by the community, but because there is an incentive to hide in the biggest crowd, one coordinator will always capture most of the liquidity. However, if that coordinator disappears, I would expect the second most popular one to take its place as the most prominent, because the liquidity would flow to it. In case that coordinator also disappears, the third one would take its place, and so on. Also, I would expect more coordinators to appear.
... what does that have to do with distributing versions of the software?

No. Automatic updates is evil. I said automatic distribution, which means that Wasabi can find new releases, download them and verify them for you.
It doesn't update/install anything. It just tells you: there is a new version downloaded here. So you can install it or ignore it.
