Hosting my own e-mail means I could stop using Proton or Tuta, and then I should use something like Thunderbird to access the account right?

Tuta does not work, if you want to use Proton in this WP setup, you'll need a Pro account and custom domain setup to work the way you want. Proton is really well setup, yes you can use Thunderbird client but you need the Proton Bridge.

Yes, Tuta doesn't support SMTP, only custom domain is available. Proton is fairly easy, but I am always happy to level up / be more independent.
