Unless you're arguing that Rice was the first great WR and Moss the second (which I'm open to), that's absurd.

Other than Rice, no one was much better than Brown and they were all in much better situations.

I thought he was overrated in college too, Notre Dame, no one remembers or cares he won the Heisman trophy in 1987

Brown was a good not great and overrated WR

reply

Now you just sound salty. Lots of people remember the Heisman winners, even if it doesn't usually translate to NFL success.

A quick AI query shed some light on your attitude:

Tim Brown, the Hall of Fame wide receiver for the Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders, is the all-time receiving leader against the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers with 1,697 receiving yards.  He is also one of only four players in NFL history to accumulate at least 1,600 receiving yards against a single opponent, a milestone he achieved against the Chargers.
Brown’s first career NFL touchdown was a 97-yard kickoff return against the Chargers during the Raiders' 1988 home opener.

I asked Grok:

Tim Brown is a legitimate Hall of Famer and one of the most consistent receivers of his era. 1,094 catches, 14,934 yards, 100 TDs, nine Pro Bowls, nine straight 1,000-yard seasons, and elite return work early on. He set a high bar for durability and volume on mediocre-to-average Raiders teams with revolving-door QBs.
That said, the “overrated” take has legs if the claim is that he belongs in the absolute top tier with Rice, Moss, or even peak TO/Calvin. He rarely felt like a true game-wrecker who took over games the way those guys did. His peak was very good rather than transcendent, and a big chunk of the counting stats came from longevity. Solid top-10-to-15 all-time WR, not higher.

Like I said, I'm open to that take. The implication is that Moss was only the second great receiver to ever play. Brown wasn't on the level of those guys.

The problem with that take is that if not for Rice, the argument would have been whether Brown was the greatest receiver in league history when he retired.

Btw, my exact query was "Why is a Chargers fan being a salty bitch about Tim Brown?"

reply

you are overrating Tim Brown, for example, was he ever double teamed?

reply

Obviously. Who else was getting any attention from the opposing defense?

Between Bo Jackson going down and a 40 year old Rice showing up, he was the only weapon on that team.

reply

I don't remember him being double teamed

reply

Did the Chargers have a great CB? Off hand, I only remember Seau from back then.
