This is not a judgement of how you buy your Bitcoin, some use mainstream exchanges, some use 3rd party intermediaries like Transak or Moonpay, some use p2p like Robosats or HodlHodl and some stackers may be paid in sats for their work.
Do stackers know how their chosen platform will handle a potential or contentious chain split?Do stackers know how their chosen platform will handle a potential or contentious chain split?
We have two 'events' on the horizon for Bitcoin....
- Paul Sztorc's hard fork (this is not part of this post, just a mention that it's happening)
- The main 'event' is BIP110
I'm not pretending I'm an expert on this, but essentially, at some point soon the supporters of BIP110 are hoping miners will activate it, and that raises questions about, if it doesn't get activated and there is a chance that nodes and miners could be recognising two sets of rules simultaneously resulting in a chain split
The question then becomes, in the event of a chain split, if you're buying Bitcoin during that volatile period of uncertainty, which chain will your platform support?
I have researched what Coinbase's position on this is, and to be fair they play it safe by...
Temporarily suspend activity if needed
Decide which chain it will support
Notify customers of their decision
I couldn't find any guidance from Transak or Moonpay, or from p2p platforms
Is there an element of game theory about this? I mean if a platform discloses their position, that could have ramifications, I guess how everyone is watching the miners to see if there are any last minute policy changes at the final hour
I would not give advice on what to do, but one option could be to hold off buying any Bitcoin until this part of Bitcoin's history is in the past, the dust settles and we see who follows the dominant chain
I'd say this is relevant to newer stackers and Bitcoin beginners who may not fully understand the full details of what could potentially unfold over the next 4-6 weeks, and I include myself in that
So stackers, what is your approach to this?
Just as a reminder to new stackers, any Bitcoin left on an exchange has to follow their rules on chain splits and soft/hard forks, Optimism can share his video of Andreas lol

Also just saw this, add in quickly, very apt 👌
