What are your thoughts about this product? I was thinking about picking up a few but it is super pricey and I am unsure how this will lower the complexity of recovery for a non technical person like a spouse or sibling.
Concept is ok directionally, at a high level at least, sounds like an HSM in many ways, which is common in enterprises... a proper enterprise HSM goes for 10s of thousands.
Just last year I posted about how I was ruminating on making an HSM: #1008700
I'd have to really dive in to nit on what I would do differently, and it's pre-production, so some of those nits may be things they change or adapt to either by production time or a rev2. The devil is in those details.
Off the cuff thoughts:
Typically with HSM's you'd want a minimum of 2 in geographically disparate locations, this seems positioned like more of a backup solution... implying your keys are hot elsewhere. So this is either not for filthy casuals or is some hybrid thing I don't quite understand yet. Basically I'm not clear on who it's for, what it solves specifically, and how it does that.
If the value is in it having HSM functionality, when you're HSM-level paranoid you typically would have at least two geographically distributed and from different vendors.
The pricing for 3 seems reasonable per each for the hardware, I don't understand why quantity 1 is so much more. Maybe there's a manufacturing volume considerations at work here.
My HSM ruminations were fleeting because hardware is just one piece to a much larger puzzle, and I don't think that's anywhere close to being the biggest issue at hand for most people. There's still so much low-hanging fruit in the personal server space generally that I think a personal HSM is either pre-mature, overkill, or largely theatric.
I don't see any reason to pre-order, seems like the kind of thing you want sunlight to disinfect a little first. Ping me in a year after they've been out in the wild and maybe some of these questions will have been answered.
I do not have a favorable opinion of Coinkite generally, so these takes are best-effort at being objective. I do kind of hope it works out though, could pair well with Sanctum.
I posted about this a little while back:
