If you've so much as glanced at movie news lately, you've seen it: The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan's new adaptation of Homer's epic. It's everywhere right now. For better or worse.

Shat's driving all the noise?

The reported budget sits around $250 million, and true to form, Nolan shot the whole thing on IMAX cameras. Something nobody's really pulled off at this scale before. This isn't just another period epic. It's Nolan swinging for the fences.

The cast is almost unfair. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, backed by a lineup that reads like a fantasy draft: Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, and more.

They didn't fake the scenery. Filming took place across Greece, Sicily, Scotland, Iceland, and Morocco. In other words, in real locations, chasing that sweeping, ancient-world atmosphere the story needs.

The story sticks close to Homer. Odysseus spends ten years trying to get home to Ithaca after the Trojan War, running into the Cyclops, Circe, Calypso, the Sirens, Poseidon, and pretty much every trial the gods can invent, while Penelope waits for him back home.

Then there's the trailer, which has caused almost as much of a stir as the film itself. Plenty of fans think it looks stunning, and a lot of people are already calling it one of the year's most anticipated releases. But it hasn't been all love. The trailer's also pulled in a huge wave of negative reactions on YouTube, mostly aimed at the casting choices and how a few mythological characters were portrayed.

And just recently, Emily Wilson (the Homer scholar and translator most people in that world know by name) didn't hold back either. Her take: the film misses the psychological and thematic depth of the original poem. Though she did admit it might push more people to actually read Homer, so there's that.

So, bottom line?

If you're a Nolan fan, get ready — expectations are sky-high. If you're a Homer purist, you'll probably find plenty to raise an eyebrow at. This film isn't shy about taking artistic liberties.

Either way, one thing's for sure: this is going to be one of the most talked-about movies of the year.
