This could be a major development in the war with Iran, depending on who is ultimately responsible and what Egypt decides to do in response.

The drone hit floating storage tanker Energos Winter, causing a fire that then spread to another vessel, Gaslog ‌Salem, three trading sources familiar with the incident said. Two separate security sources said the cause of the blast was a drone strike.

Given that this is a Mediterranean port it has fallen outside the lines of where the action has been. That being said it is also something that Iranian proxies could look to hit in an attempt to cause damage behind the lines. The importance of this possible strike is because two days ago Iranian TV listed this port as a possible target for retaliation against Ukrainian interests for the Ukrainian strike on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea. They even ran the headline of “What could be the targets of Iran’s revenge against Ukraine?”

A strike against this port, hitting a U.S. owned vessel and an important Ukrainian interest, would hit both the U.S. and Ukraine at once. However, it would be incredibly insane for that to happen because not only would dragging Ukraine into the war bring a country that has become experts in drone warfare further into play, but it would also possibly bring in Egypt. Given that Egypt has one of, if not the strongest, militaries in the African/Arab world, that would be a wild move of desperation by Iran.

Egypt has not yet announced that the strike occurred, but two sources have confirmed it and that Egypt is investigating. I could see that if an Iranian proxy or the IRGC itself does not announce that this has happened, Egypt would try to address this behind the scenes but nonetheless this is a wild and significant development.
