just because you're spooked about your HWW situation doesn't mean you aren't capable of self-custody. keep your fucking coins off the exchanges, or we all lose.

Is the dice path actually safe from the RNG bug?Is the dice path actually safe from the RNG bug?

short answer: yes, thank goodness

Sadly, I'm seeing a lot of advice to move to exchanges:

I know these folks mean well: they are trying to save people who might make poor decisions while in panic mode, but all the same, I think that a good number of people might move their coins to an exchange and never bother leaving after this.

Self custody is still better than letting someone else hold your coins.

reply

Yeah people are in a panic especially if dealing with people who aren’t technical. I understand why they say go this route but it is sad to see.

Hacks like this makes me think is the NSA/CIA trying to flush someone out to an exchange.

reply

Self custody has already been having a rough go these last two years. I think bitcoiners are going to need to come up with a new approach if we want to see self-custody become widespread.

reply

Not sure! I truly think we must stop dumbing down.

Being your own bank is hard. Just go work at a bank and find out all the things a bank does to secure money and why - catch you in 2046 when you've caught up reading and understanding everything. Or, if you focus only on HSM process, in a year or 3 - that's about the time it takes to full-time to build the knowledge and experience into being capable of participating on the input side of a decision making process around those. AI won't speed that up, unless you're letting the AI make the decisions for you (that would be a poor choice.)

There are basically two things you can do if you got rekt (or risked it and were on time) in this: 1. intensify, 2. capitulate. We'll see a lot of capitulation because most Bitcoiners don't need Bitcoin (they negate the benefits through other behavior) - they just need the NgU. And NgU will at some point guaranteed slow down. So, maybe we'll see some demand drop. Wouldn't be the worst thing if you have income.

This is an interesting proposition (and as usual the rest of your comment is full of things that make me think). I wonder how Bitcoin culture would change if we all had to come to grips with very minimal ngu with no end in sight. Certainly might change a lot of people's views. As you say, they might realize that they don't need it.

The only place I really need Bitcoin is on SN, because I can't zap without it.

Maybe also for some payments I do. It'd be nice it could help with the melting ice cube dollars I would otherwise be holding, but I see thus making sense.

reply

It'll still help with melting ice cube dollars, but that's not the kind of NgU people are using Bitcoin for - let's be real: it's that 10x that Hayes keeps talking about why most are even slightly interested.

reply

This advice makes a lot of sense to me. It’s pretty basic triage logic.

reply

I see that, but it comes with risks that are easy to overlook. Not least of which is that I suspect a significant portion of people who "fly to safety" on an exchange will not soon come back to self custody. And I wonder how many people will see such advice and think: if it's good enough for an emergency, maybe it's good enough for all the time.

reply

And also we will get a lot of this:

The ETFs win.

(And also the government)

reply

Of course I agree with you but I also don’t think they’re wrong about what most people will be comfortable with.

who follows this recommendations will find out

well, I'm not at all pleased to see big names embracing the 6102 risk, frankly...

I'm sure they mean well, but it's a terrible lazy shame.

Last time I moved funds to an exchange it was seized due to "OFAC" or something. If your history is untraceable it is deemed suspciious. I promised to not disclose the name of the exchange as part of my end of the deal if they return the coins. I will not name it, but it is a bitcoin only exchange.

reply

At least use a software wallet, but please don't move to an exchange

So as long as you rolled dice when setting up the seed, funds should be safe?
