Well, yesterday I got a notification about a trailer, and when I started watching it, wow! It blew me away. Ridley Scott with a post-apocalyptic horror film? How is that even possible? I know he has dystopian worlds and aliens under his belt, but not in that straightforward style, as far as I knew. I watched it, and since I'm a fan of that style of film and television, I recognized the formula immediately.

Post-apocalyptic cinema has taught us that when society collapses and humanity shows its worst side, there's no better lifeline than an armed spirit, a desolate horizon, and, of course, a four-legged companion.

The recent trailer and previously unseen footage of The Dog Stars, directed by the legendary Ridley Scott, confirm that this time-tested formula remains the undisputed queen of survival on the big screen. With a cast led by Jacob Elordi and Josh Brolin, the film promises, I'm almost certain, to become the new benchmark for this subgenre.

Based on Peter Heller's acclaimed book, the story takes place nine years after a brutal global pandemic wiped out almost all of humanity.

In this devastated landscape, we meet Hig (Jacob Elordi), a skilled widowed pilot who survives in isolation in an airplane hangar (a rather common location for this type of setting, haha) in Colorado. His only allies in this void are his loyal dog and Bangley (Josh Brolin), a former naval operative, armed to the teeth and an expert in military survival tactics.

The trailer exudes a suffocating atmosphere of high tension. We see the enormous complicity—but also the ideological clash—of this unlikely duo. While protecting their perimeter from the lethal "reapers" (ruthless looters), a mysterious radio transmission awakens a spark of hope in Hig, (a common theme in these kinds of films).

This compels him to start his small plane and embark on a perilous journey into the unknown, crossing that invisible line that gives the film its title—the same old story: leaving the safe haven for the insecure. But what can you do?

For those of us who love stories where a solitary man finds solace in an animal while dodging extinction, Ponto Sem Retorno feels like coming home. It's impossible not to draw direct parallels with the genre's great pillars:

I Am Legend: The purest reflection of loneliness. Will Smith and his dog Samantha showed us that canine loyalty is the only thing that keeps a man sane amidst the silence of the end of the world.

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior: The original road warrior already traveled the wasteland with an Australian Cattle Dog and a shotgun, defending gasoline trucks from looters.

The Walking Dead: The great Daryl Dixon and his beloved Dog (a beautiful Belgian Malinois whose real name was Seven) are one of the best modern examples.

Dawn of the Dead: In this Zack Snyder classic, an adorable Border Collie named Chips becomes the hero of a key scene. Since zombies ignore animals and only seek human flesh, survivors use it to send supplies through the horde.

If the premise of "a tough guy and his dog" is already appealing, the name behind the camera raises expectations to astronomical levels. Ridley Scott is an undisputed master of cinematic atmosphere. To speak of him is to speak of the visual majesty of Blade Runner, the claustrophobic tension of Alien, and the epic pulse of Gladiator or Black Hawk Down.

With a screenplay by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) and the impeccable, textured cinematography of Erik Messerschmidt, we know beforehand that every shot of this devastated world will be a work of art. Scott constructs worlds that feel painfully real, barren, and dangerous, worlds that are always the envy of other directors, I'm almost certain.

The premiere of this post-apocalyptic "odyssey" is scheduled for the end of August in theaters.

I think with this gathering of actors, producers, directors, etc., the film looks promising. I'm definitely going to sit here and wait for it, ready with my popcorn.
