Without this update, Voyager II would have had to shut off another instrument this year due to the lowering power output thanks to being in service for 50 years. Now it will be able to run the three instruments that are still on for at least another year before flight managers will be stuck having to possibly turn one off. The team is looking to do the update over the next few months for Voyager I as well, so it will also get an extension.
