Sometimes this can happen by mistake. I say this because some languages are tonal. If this translation was done via text I wonder if context is lost. Marcus was deep into stoicism so the audiobook is very monotone. But I ask myself did Marcus smile when he was thinking about his kind mother? Gruff when writing about his stepfather? The raw human emotion gets lost.

True, but I’d wager that a lot of our idioms date back to Greek and Roman origins. It would strike me as odd and inappropriate for a translator to inject modern idioms.
