Hold up! The messenger ain’t to blame!

Why do you guys keep mining?
Roughnecks advises people to stop mining on BIP110 chain

I haven't seen you post about BCH, BSV, genesis-shitforks...

They changed consensus. It means shitfork. They plan to change PoW. It means shitcoin.

<insert they're the same picture meme>

They plan to change PoW

Does that mean they’re gonna keep mining on this chain instead of the one that’s currently longer?

reply

Yes. They have decided this is the real chain, the other one is "an attack of pedos on Bitcoin."

It's power consolidation. Probably the poorest execution of a hostile takeover I have seen in the history of Bitcoin.

reply

That’s kinda messed up, and keeping on mining this chain seems risky to me. Isn’t there a risk of a double spend?

reply

risk of attack, same as BCH had. They need the hard fork to derisk from that. So they're gone now.

reply

They just mined another one. Quick question: If I make a transaction now, is there a chance it could end up in a block on this chain? Is there any way to make sure which chain I’m using? And when’s the hard fork?

Has the easier POW been put into effect, and is that why this block got hit?

reply

I have no idea, I’m completely clueless about this stuff. Maybe @optimism or @Kruw knows!

reply

No. From the leading zeros in a block hash you can tell something about difficulty:

000000000000000000007 <- Bitcoin tip
00000000000000000000c <- Lukecoin tip

Same(ish) difficulty

reply

I didn’t realize @siggy47 was talking about the difficulty. Quick question: they can’t change the difficulty without doing a hard fork, right? The difficulty only changes every 2016 blocks, and the next one will be at block 963,648. Is it possible to have different difficulty levels on the two chains?

reply
difficulty

If you change the actual algo, you won't be able to validate the blocks at all anymore - they will all be invalid. Hard fork = software swap.

they can’t change the difficulty without doing a hard fork, right?

Correct.

The difficulty only changes every 2016 blocks, and the next one will be at block 963,648. Is it possible to have different difficulty levels on the two chains?

Yes. But I think that at this rate, September 1st will come before they found 2016 blocks (and even then, the max retarget is 75% down (i.e. 0.25 * current difficulty) so that won't help them much at these hash rates either)

Pure madness that 6 EH is being torched on that chain tip rn.
