'A former US official, Paul Craig Roberts, who served as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury under former President Ronald Reagan, has said that the ongoing wars in the Middle East, particularly the war against Iran, cannot be understood in isolation from what he described as a wider agenda linked to the so-called “Greater Israel” project.
He said that, in his view, Israel has succeeded in pushing US President Donald Trump into confrontation with Iran, something it had failed to achieve with previous US presidents. He added that this shift reflects Israel’s ability to influence US decision-making on this sensitive issue.
The former US official also said that most wars in the Middle East in the 21st century are fundamentally linked to this concept of “Greater Israel”. He argued that the economic and political consequences of these conflicts are not limited to the countries involved, but extend to the global economy, particularly the energy sector and related markets.'

Do you think the future would be back to a local economy?
Globally? I don't think so. People need to change their consumerist mindset and their expectation of easy access to resources for that to happen. In small regions? Yes, it’s already happening in places untouched by consumerism, and this trend is likely to strengthen as governments increase digital surveillance and control over their currencies. Bitcoin empowers these local communities.
The future isn't usually "back to" anything.

I don't think so. Nationalism / security spheres are already making something else happen: trade segregation within blocs. I was spending a lot of time in Moscow when their 2014 EU sanctions hit and they banned all food imports - from their #1 source of fruits and vegetables. For the first months, the grocers had issues, but after 2 or 3 they started selling Peruvian fruits and vegetables (at a massive premium vs the formerly imported EU foods.)
This is the immediate future I foresee, where trade is no longer global, but politics limit free trade with (a growing list of) perceived hostile states. Intriguingly, I remember reading accounts that this was something that happened in Europe right before the 2 great wars. So that doesn't predict a great outcome in the mid-term.
I think that we have 2 markets at the moment:
I don't see this local shift in goods and services globally, precisely because they are under state regulations and therefore won't be localized. There's always someone in the world to supply the demand of people accustomed to products not produced and grown locally. It would be a major cultural break for social groups, and that's why I believe and see this happening more individually in remote locations.
Nah. Globalization is way too big to ignore. You might get some local economy here and there, but it’s always tiny.
It was Day 1 of the Primary School Leaving Examination oral. When I read the passage, a grin spread across my face. Not only had I anticipated expressions like “Good morning!” and “memorable” to come out, I had also actively prepared students for it.
