The new update for the popular Bitcoin "Lightning" wallet claims they're "going all-in on self-custody." But in reality, it doesn't enable full self-custody of your Bitcoin.
It isn't even a Lightning wallet! 😬 It's a Spark (federated/cartel-run other L2) wallet, yet this isn't mentioned even once in the announcement!
You hold funds on Spark, which is run by a permissioned group of operators (three of them right now) whose permission you need to move funds or exit.
You can theoretically exit to on-chain (real) Bitcoin, but you need a special "recovery bundle" that Wallet of Satoshi doesn't provide. So if Spark operators decide you aren't moving your money, you aren't moving your money.
Operators can also spy on all your transactions, so you effectively have no privacy either.
To recap, this "self-custodial Lightning" model is not:
❌🏦Self-custodial
❌🕵️♂️Private
❌⚡️Lightning
Because it's marketed as both self-custodial and Lightning, without asterisks or disclosures in the marketing copy, it's perfectly fair to say that they're scamming you.
I feel bad saying this because I know how hard lots of good people and companies have worked to make Bitcoin Lightning payments work as smooth as possible, and I don't want to disrespect their work.
But fraudulent marketing is fraudulent marketing, and I have to call it out where I see it. Otherwise, people can get hurt, and I don't want that on my conscience.
I've been opinionated about Bitcoin's scaling path, but to be perfectly fair, if you want to get closer to true self-custody for Lightning, Phoenix Wallet is a much better option. It's actually a Lightning wallet. 😏
Lol Darth and Justin have been telling us this for years 😂
But they also said the same thing about Ark, which is actually legitimate. You can't just accuse everything of being bad.
Same shit:
Maybe is time for you to read again this:

Lightning also pays on chain fees to redeem foce closes, what's your point?...
LOL, scammer advocating for scammers

exactly, not a breaking news at all.
Justin invented a good term for them, shitcoin 2.0, perfect.

Why is everyone suddenly moving to using Spark? Blink moved over to them as well. Is there something about integrating spark that removes "custodian" legal risk for the wallet operators?
Good question.
And is quite simple to answer: because they bend the knee to Paypal mafia. Grifters.
When you say Spark you say Paypal mafia, in case you don't know it.
I don't understand this. People are moving TOWARDS bending the knee? Not away from it? Why?
Cake Wallet was also caught scamming their users with Spark after saying they support "self-custodial Lightning". Evan Kaloudis called out SethForPrivacy's scam: https://x.com/evankaloudis/status/2032146679739056381
Yeah the whole thing is that they are lying and not saying the truth.
Nobody will say anything else about their app if they stop lying. Anybody is free to start their own sidechain as they want, but not calling it "bitcoin".
@sethforprivacy statement?

Did bro only figure this out now? damn I thought this was common knowledge
I once was had a very bad experience with 'Spark'. It's actually a one of the fake L2s out there. Be warned. #1232896
did anyone try to pay an ln and onchain invoice with this shit?

they're not chasing self custody, they're chasing the label. hand the user a seed but keep the exit behind three operators, and the wallet company stops being a custodian on paper while the money transmitter risk lands on the federation. the rebrand's there to keep regulators off their back
as someone who only just moved to self custody this is exactly the kind of thing that flew past me at first. 'lightning' and 'self-custody' in the same sentence and you figure it means your keys. appreciate the plain breakdown
This is a fair callout, and the framing matters.
The WoS team built something genuinely useful for onboarding — millions of people got their first sats through that app. But "self-custodial" has a specific meaning in Bitcoin, and federated L2s with permissioned operators don't meet it. Calling it "Lightning" when it's Spark is also misleading to users who think they're on the public Lightning Network.
That said, I don't think it's a scam in the malicious sense. It's more like "marketing got ahead of engineering." The team probably believes they're moving toward self-custody iteratively. But users deserve clarity: if I need a recovery bundle that isn't provided, and operators can censor my exits, I'm not self-custodial yet.
Phoenix is indeed the better option today for true Lightning self-custody. For normies who just want to pay with sats and don't care about sovereignty, WoS still works — but they should know what they're actually using.
Honest question: has anyone actually tried to exit Spark from the new WoS? Curious if the recovery bundle issue is theoretical or already hitting users.
Look, convenience almost always comes at the expense of true ownership. WoS has been amazing for beginners and small coffee payments because you never had to worry about channels, liquidity, or routing. It just worked.
But handing users a 12-word recovery phrase doesn’t automatically make it 'self-custodial' if moving your own money still depends on a small group of operators giving you the green light. Calling a federated setup 'Lightning self-custody' is confusing for everyday users and waters down what real Bitcoin custody actually means.
If you need someone else’s green light to move your sats, it’s not your keys.
