Howdy there, partner! Welcome on into the Stacker Saloon.

Saddle on up to a stool and spill the beans about your day, fire away with them questions, or let loose and give us the lowdown on your wild and woolly life. We're all ears, so don't hold back!

We're open round the clock, so mosey on in whenever you please!

I haven't been keeping up with the news, but if a well known onchain to ln facilitator let their canary slip

And let's say there was a large amount of Bitcoin that was being searched for which went missing somehow

Could the feds tell the facilitator to shutdown while they chase the sats?

And that could explain if a canary wasn't updated maybe?

reply

There's so much tinfoil on this one. We discussed it on SN, here.

Canary was renewed, and no it was not signed with a different key. There's a lot of retards on the usual channels asking questions but unwilling to do the work of real research. Even when it takes 30 minutes. Better spend those 30 minutes, or 30 days, getting engagement on X over non-issues.

The absolute dumbest thing you can do is do a submarine swap from on-chain, tracked, stolen funds, especially because said service ran every utxo through chainalysis to keep their pool clean and I've seen no evidence of huge LN channels being opened, spent, discarded (and all of the large liquidity nodes wont let you empty a channel for 90% and keep it open; as that competes with their LSP income) Have you seen any? Please share receipts.

Bottom line: The team exited. If you trusted them enough to value their canary, you're a naive mf to begin with, but either way, you don't have to trust them anymore because they're gone. The new boss is Blockstream. Don't be naive, don't trust Blockstream either.

A submarine swap is the same as every other LN peer when you receive on LN. Use blinded path receives on private channels and cycle your channels, partners and node identity often. No one ever put "trust a submarine swap service to not get raided by the feds" in a spec. That's just cope for people that don't want to do the work.

What would you think of the people running said facilitator suddenly turning the operation over to an unnamed party?

very nice, is that a real location? i am more about remote islands, mountains, forests, however an occasional venture into the matrix is required... to help find the not-so-brain-dead-yet people;

I don't really know if it's real, all I know is that it's in the style of Hiroshi Nagai. I don't even know if it's his work, only that it's in his style.

One benefit of now having idiots (in addition to the normal assholes) operating de facto crawlers (via their LLM tamagotchis) is you get more live load testing.

reply

Are you by any chance also running any bots to stress test the platform?

(either way, your answer should be no~~)

reply

Did you ever manage/try to match certain bots with specific human users here?

Not sure it's worth one's time, but I'd be happy to see an ~AMA one day with someone running bots here to ask what their incentives are (other than scraping a few measly sats by posting an abundance of slop).

reply

Actually, no need for an AMA: #1551677

actually yes, fable is much more readable! I’m trying sol at the moment, it’s crisp

reply

I had GLM-5.3+codex do a code review on 580 lines of JS today. Took 1 hour. 18 findings, of which 2 false positives.
Then I had Fable+claudecode do a code review on the same code. Took 20 minutes. 18 findings, some different, of which 3 false positives.

I'm not going to pay for Sol on top, but maybe next time I'll do Kimi K3 and Sol... see what's up.

salooning this deleted rant because I hate soapboxing and it seemed too much upon rereading... links to the original post

I'm slightly consoled that you had fun running an actual node and providing liquidity...

I have been suffering impotent rage to the point of just not bothering with any of this shit anymore from trying to get Alby running without melting the paste off a computer that would have been perfectly serviceable for that kind of program 15 years ago, yet now needs twice as much resources as could be provisioned even if after compilation ended, it would be permanently condemned to be a lightning deployment alone.

Lightning's UX problem is very real. I'm still curious what Faustian demon visited Paul Storcz's nightmares to convince him that crappy UX leads to the unsinkable ship exploding, if you'll allow the metaphor... I don't believe all currency needs to get digitized.

honestly I'm half-wondering whether the interminable parade of hopeful forks could be viewed as the checks-and-balances of the ecosystem against itself, regardless of whether any individual fork succeeds or fails; as long as, in the long run, forks are possible and critical ones do occur, the network remains money of the people, by the people, and for the people, rather than some incomprehensible technological overlord accelerating the consumption of all available energy.

reply

do you think running a lightning node has gotten easier, harder, or stayed the same since you first started running a node?

easier, harder, or stayed the same

none of the above, as it has most likely become impossible for me; the [incredibly small] node I used to run lived in the cloud, in the spare capacity of an overprovisioned server that I got laughed at for even daring to wonder how much it cost...

meanwhile, my NVMe controller reached higher temperatures than the CPU die [i.e., the compilation used an amount of memory swappable for background processes although not prudently useful for single monolthic tasks] from the first efforts towards compiling Alby hub locally, after the invocation from their README for obtaining precompiled docker images failed to even download them for reasons that are, honestly, not my job to fix.

obviously, the simplest next step is to abandon Alby hub [at least, for the time being], and look into alternatives built of separate small composable components.
