I've been spending more time on Stacker News lately. I've been reading, joining discussions, sharing some of the things I'm working on, and occasionally receiving real sats along the way.
While looking at those sats today, a simple idea came to mind.
Instead of adding bitcoin specifically to open my first Lightning channel, why not just keep the sats that come from my activity here and use them for that when there's enough?
I'm thinking of 100,000 sats as a reasonable first goal.
There's no deadline. I'm not trying to turn this into a race, and this isn't a request for donations.
I'll just keep doing what I've been doing here. Reading, learning, sharing things I'm working on, and joining discussions when I have something useful to say.
If those sats eventually reach the point where I can open my first Lightning channel, that's what I'll use them for.
More importantly, I'd like to share the process here as I go. Setting up the node, learning how channel liquidity works, making mistakes along the way, and eventually opening that first channel.
Maybe some of what I learn will be useful to someone else thinking about doing the same thing.
For now, it's just an idea that came to me today.
Let's see where it goes. ⚡
This is very similar to how I got started. My advice would actually be to hold off on opening a channel that small. I pretty quickly regretted not having a larger channel to Stacker News and opening multiple channels to the same place is not ideal.
It’s probably better to open an inbound channel with one of the big LSP’s. That way you only have to pay the setup fee and get a much larger channel for the same amount of sats, which you can gradually add to as you earn more.
Good luck on your journey to opening your own channel.
Thank you! Still a lot to learn, but I'm looking forward to the journey. ⚡
Nice way to approach it. Using sats earned from the community to fund the first channel makes the whole process part of the learning.
