Maybe I am a zealot.
But if the Navy erases the name of Doris Miller, a Black sailor who fought at Pearl Harbor, to honor a living politician, the issue goes beyond a ship’s name. It asks whether we honor courage and sacrifice or defer to power.
Miller served as a mess attendant in a segregated Navy. At Pearl Harbor, he aided his wounded commander and operated an anti-aircraft gun he had never been trained to use. He later received the Navy Cross and was killed in combat.
In 2020, the Navy named an aircraft carrier USS Doris Miller, the first carrier named for an African American and an enlisted sailor. Now, CNN reports that officials are considering replacing his name with Donald Trump’s, even as the Navy reportedly considers recommending Miller for the Medal of Honor.
The contradiction is stark: Miller’s courage could receive America’s highest military honor while his name disappears from one of its most powerful warships. His valor would be honored in principle but displaced in public memory.
Call me a zealot, but this is not about ideological purity. It is about whether we remember the sailor who risked everything, or the politician who holds power now. When history names its heroes, should courage yield to a politician who avoided military service and tried to overturn an election?
Ergo didn't happen. But now it has to happen out of spite. Blame CNN.
That’s just the Trump part. We already established the administration is anti-Black. This isn’t the first military erasure of Black history. Deny it if you will. I prefer explicit acknowledgment and ownership.
This is the least racist administration in US history. Just so you understand.
