I already posted on here about Alma and Binx, but today we have Willow, the more canine troublemaker at our homestead.
I've spent a lot of time training Willow to be protective over our chickens and ducks in the right ways and she's taken her job very seriously. She's gotten good and catching biddies that get out and bringing them back to the pen without hurting them and god forbid someone she doesn't know approaches them. For the most part, she's great at her job. Recently, though, she's noticed that our neighbors also have their own flock; and that can't be permitted.
I've woken up four times to the sound of a biddie chirping coming from her pen. It's not enough that she steals our neighbors' chickens, she's got to walk around with them in her mouth and keep them in her kennel. I really need to get her trained on that, now.
It is extraordinary that she carries them without killing them.
I had that exact thought running through my mind
She's got a lot of lab in her. They're generally pretty good about not clamping down too hard. That was originally bred to keep them from destroying ducks that a hunter shot, but she's got good maternal instincts and I've been teaching her to not get too aggressive.
She’s a tough cookie—that’s what my grandma would say... hahahaha.
Training a dog for farm work is a challenging task, but not impossible.
I know.
He does his job very well, he really takes it seriously. No chicken escapes his radar.
