I too was shocked that anyone would expect people to vibe with “money is the moderator”.

I love it and the kinds of people I want here would too, but we’re really fucking weird.

we oddballs are right, and they just dont like our words (but would like the content if properly explained/explored?) or we oddballs are wrong? Or, you know, general disagreement of values; no accounting for taste?

On this one, we oddballs are right. The incentives are just better, regardless of your tastes.

I have wondered if there isn't some value to our weirdness. It seems to me that it is difficult to attract users with descriptions of a nicer community with better incentives. Saying it's a place where you have to pay to post or especially where "money is the moderator" has a certain shock value I've been hoping makes people do a double take.

I suspect that if I had phrased my posts on these fora more gently ("How could we increase users' skin in the game?"), I wonder how many people would have decided to reply to the thread.

But shock value/ugly marketing may be the wrong approach.

My suspicion is that the pitch will work reasonably well on people who love economics. Several other issues become recruitment problems at that point:

  1. The allure of earning micropayments may be small
  2. They may not be inclined towards social media in the first place
  3. They might not vibe with the current SN culture

Most eventual stackers will wind up here because they enjoy the discussion quality and they'll only come to understand later how the mechanics of the site foster it.
