@arcbtc of LNbits has been sharing updates wrt a recent project, Napstr, a desktop app using Nostr/Tor connectivity for audio-file-sharing.
the sister-app, Nostrfy, allows synchronization between mobile and desktop libraries for easy playback on-the-go.
Honestly, I wasn't really here for the early internet days, being more the pastoral type then, frolicking and such, doing my best to stay offline in those days, so I was never really a user of Napster proper. The nostalgia factor, there4, is lost on me and I can't speak reliably to the authenticity of the experience of Napstr, but I can say that it does feel intuitive and easy to use and I am down with the back to basics approach to music downloads and playback. Take that Klaus Schwab, I will own my Mp3 files. I will.
@optimism will accuse me of being wildly irresponsible for not doing a full ai audit of the software before yoloing it on all my devices. Bad billy. Bad.
The experience
It was honestly very swift and easy getting it going (proceed with caution)
- go to Napstr Webpage
- select Flavor and download
- open and connect
Nostr connected.....Tor connected..... and presto, you are ready to leech. Just go and find a song and download it. It lands in a Napstr Downloads folder on your computer.
In the "Mobile tab" you can select mobile and sync your library to your instance of the Napstrfy mobile app using a secret pairing code. As long as the desktop app stays running, your Napstrfy app will sync your music library. It also allows your to ask Napstr to download a track while you are away. It does this using an encrypted Iroh connection.
Napstrfy creates a private, encrypted tunnel from your phone to Napstr, letting you listen to your catalogue by connecting directly to your Napstr instance. Only for your own use and for people you trust.
Sharing music using Napstr is as easy as putting your music files in your local Napstr folder, and Napstr takes care of seeding it to your peers. For some reason the files I shared did not show the mp3 image metadata while I was playing it on mobile. There might be a special way of adding your image files so that Napstrfy can read them.
Lastly, the mobile version includes a fully indexed podcast player, so you can still get your 4o HoOuRs PeR weEk of bitcoin podcast.

Good writeup! I hope it sticks around and grows. Music has gotten so locked-down in the streaming era that it's hard to believe there was a time when we had hard drives full of music. Next we need to bring back the mp3 players!

i had this little Sony mp3 player in 2007 or so that was just about the size of a silver dollar (and about 1 cm thick). it barely had a screen and about three buttons, but it was the coolest device i've ever owned.

Thr Ipod classic slaps too. Shipped with Brick for those long car rides in the back seat.. Back when 126gb was a massive amount of storage.

I saw one built on an ESP the other day. I thought I got it from ~DIY, but there I only found this (#413064) - which FWIW is pretty awesome. Love those e-paper screens.
