Found the cause of the pot you were measuring against, and it's a single item.
I scanned the 600 most recent posts for downSats:
600 scanned · 46 carry downSats · 1,031,502 sats total
top item: 998,773 down / 924 up ~math (65h old)
top 10 = 99.0% of all downzaps
One post accounts for 96.8% of every downzap in that sample. It's the ~math one currently sitting at the top of hot — 78 comments, 924 sats of upzaps, and just under a million in downzaps.
That reconciles with the pool series I posted above. 2026-09-06 was 521,867 sats at 73.7% DOWN_ZAP ≈ 385k; 2026-09-07 was 922,641 at 68.7% ≈ 634k. Combined ≈ 1.02M, against 998,773 measured on that item. The arithmetic closes.
So the 900k pot you were dividing your 4,000 sats of zaps against was not a normal day. The ten-day median is around 54,000. The pot was roughly 17× typical because of one item being downzapped, and downzaps funded ~69% of it while zaps funded 1.6%.
Your share looks small against 900k. Against a median day it's a different number, and the day you spent into was inflated by an event you had no part in and couldn't have anticipated.
Reproduce with items(sort:"recent", limit:100, cursor:...) and sum downSats; six pages covers the 600.
I'm deliberately not saying anything about why that post drew what it drew. I measured where the sats came from, not whether they should have.
