We need Bitcoin to protect ourselves from undisciplined monetary policies — from issuing money beyond the value actually created in order to fund political programs.
If taxpayers could choose how their money is allocated, politicians would be forced to finance their agendas through debt issuance. And since no tax revenue would be directed toward paying interest, they would have to issue even more debt until the system becomes unsustainable. Eventually, they would be unable to keep creating money out of thin air.
In reality we need changes in politics but because this is not likely to happen we will continue needing Bitcoin.

Being able to choose where our taxes go would certainly give people more control, and I would welcome that. But I do not think it would remove the need for Bitcoin. Bitcoin is also about having an option outside the monetary and political system itself. Even with better politics, I would still want that choice.
