OpenAI CEO Sam Altman now says his company will not go public this year, citing growing concerns about AI safety.
In an interview with Fortune published Saturday, Altman said that an IPO now would be “ill-advised.” The decision pushes one of the most anticipated IPOs in history until at least 2027 and gives the clearest sign yet that mounting concerns about increasingly powerful AI are beginning to reshape the industry’s business plans.
Altman’s comments came on the same day that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay urging AI companies to slow how quickly they improve their most advanced models.
Slowing down frontier LLM development in the US only works if the only source of the Chinese LLMs, especially Kimi K3, is distillation and replayed traces of Claude and GPT. However, since a lot of people are using Kimi now, and particularly for security work, these labs are getting their own traces, and very high value ones because they're getting those that the US labs don't have, since the latter are constraining and declining to process these. So the global competition can do their own post training on their own traces now.
You cannot put this genie back in the bottle. It's completely meaningless to slow down development.
Yeah, this definitely adds some uncertainty. AI safety matters just as much as pushing the technology forward. If these models are becoming more powerful this quickly, taking the time to understand the risks and build proper safeguards seems like a pretty reasonable move.

👀 hmm this will cause a lot of uncertainty
If the people building frontier AI are starting to say slow down, that’s probably worth paying attention to. The technology is moving faster than the systems meant to keep it accountable.
