I don't give my kids an allowance. I do offer to pay them for recurring jobs. These are different than the chores they are expected to do as part of being in this family.

For instance, I pay them to clean out my car. I also pay them to help with some of the house care (if I'm doing a little renovation project or something). I pay my oldest (11 years) to do a full cleaning of the kitchen twice a week -- and she does a pretty great job.

I'm hoping as they get older I can pay them to do more things that help our family.

That is one of the best ways for them to learn the value of earning money through effort and hard work. I’ve done similar things where my daughter does a task and I pay her for it; there was a time when I was in the clothing business, and I used to pay my daughter to wash hangers and organize the clothes (she was seven years old at the time).
