Background
The goal of this experiment is to showcase how buying bitcoin and holding can beat stock picking.
Motley Fool is pretty well known in the investment space and they charge customers a good amount of fiat for access to their stock selections. 5 Years ago I got a free offer via my credit card to try Motley Fool’s stock advisor product for one year.
Using a simple dollar cost averaging strategy (DCA) of $100 a month ($50 to Stock Advisor and $50 to Bitcoin) I purchased their recommended stocks and bought bitcoin.
The results are below:
Performance to Date:
Bitcoin $5,968.21 (Return of +88.60%)
- Previous: $4,294.64 (+42.47%)
Sitting on 7,336,098 sats with a cost basis of $3,164.50 at a BTC price of $81,354.00. Bitcoin continues to pull away in this experiment, generating an 88.60% total gain and leading the stock portfolio by nearly $2,000 in net profit.
Stock Advisor $3,996.62 (Return of +26.17%)
- Previous: $3,340.46 (+11.06%)
CrowdStrike continues to carry the weight of this portfolio with a +300.02% gain ($1,149.44 market value against a $287.35 cost basis). Shopify (+78.03%) and Amazon (+59.08%) have also staged significant rallies. On the downside, The Trade Desk (-73.45%) and Fiverr (-66.80%) remain major drags on performance. Overall basis sits at $3,167.62 across the 11 positions.
Conclusion
While both portfolios are in the green, stacking sats with a zero-effort DCA has generated $2,803.71 in profit versus $829.00 for the Stock Advisor picks. Even with a 4-bagger like CrowdStrike, individual stock picking suffers from severe downside drag when picks like TTD and FVRR collapse.

Final Thought
Bitcoin continues to demonstrate that you don't need expensive subscription newsletters, quarterly earnings reports, or stock picking guesswork to build wealth. A disciplined DCA into Bitcoin continues to beat high-effort stock picking hands down. But the passive investor is still doing better than everyone by just buying the NASDAQ. But the stock advisor is not a good product for the buy and hold forever investor. Bitcoin is proving with this experiment to be a solid option!! Wait till the bull market comes!
