I think BIP-177 comes from a desire to leave some legacy, no matter how unreasonable it is. You want to change the language to make it less confusing, but also hand-wave away arguments about how it's actually more confusing now?
I think that naming should be normative (= specification), and not informational. Otherwise all it does is create confusion, and the point of formalizing naming is to reduce confusion.
