We were out at an event today in a different part of town than we normally go to. I checked the map in my AlbyGo app and saw an ice cream place that supposedly accepts lightning.
We stopped in on the way home and I saw that they had a customer-facing Square terminal. Two rainbow sherbet cones later, I pressed the bitcoin button on the checkout screen and scanned the QR code from AlbyGo. Easy peasy, transaction complete.
This is an amazing experience. You don't need to announce your intent to pay with bitcoin to some confused normie behind the register. I think this is what bitcoinization will look like: parallel monetary options until merchants stop taking fiat.
That is the kind of small, real-world payment that makes ~lightning feel ordinary. Nice one!
Very nice, I've always had ease of transactions with the square terminals. I think the really hard part for me in AZ is few vendors actually accept bitcoin. Maybe a nail salon, sub shop, or car wash do - but generally people do not accept bitcoin here. I don't know why, maybe it is just a very fiat state?

I feel no urge to force a Bitcoin conversation, but some of them are curious to see which app I am paying with. In that case, I'll just say I pay with Bitcoin.
I see it as exercise in normalization rather than evangelizing.
I wonder, when that happens, does the merchant never know they received BTC? Do they get a notification, or they just receive fiat from auto-swap if they never played with any setting ?
As I understand it, the default is an autoswap into fiat. So, only those merchants who enabled a bitcoin wallet will receive real bitcoin.
I'm looking forward to a world where I can use Bitcoin for everything. For now I rely heavily on credit cards to reduce my exposure to the fiat system as much as possible. I do have a heuristic for when I have options spending Bitcoin. I prioritize spending Bitcoin with those who offer the highest probability of them spending with me in the future. Hopefully there's more and more options to when I can rip the bandaid off and ditch the credit cards all together.
I mostly spend with a Fold card and stack reward sats, but I've been eager to successfully use one of these Square terminals.
It was cool. If there were more options, I think I'd be happy spending more bitcoin, regardless of what's downstream of those merchants.
