Most of what I want from LLMs that I struggle to get is human readable code on complex problems. Until that happens, I think people are getting ahead of themselves when trusting LLMs in high risk and high accountability environments.
Would you say LLM generated code is less readable than human generated code?
I haven't necessarily found that, but at the same time most of my coding is done under a very different environment and goal.
It depends on the human, but LLMs are generally worse than most humans at writing human readable code because they don't "think" like humans nor are trained on code quality afaict. When I read most human code, even when it's bad, I can understand and anticipate the decisions that were made. When I read LLM code it tends to feel arbitrary and rule-based at best; it's kind of feels like reading the code of someone with a memory problem or someone sleep deprived incapable of holding the full context in their mind and too narrowly focused on each part independent of the others.
It's a lot of the same thing that gives LLM writing away. There's no clear sense in the path it takes to its answer.
Agree. LLM code - for complicated features or fixes - often becomes hard to review, and with that it means that unless you fix it, it becomes hard to maintain. So it's either you yolo and narrate your way to riches, or you're in a world of pain.
It somehow doesn't go through the
simplifyphase enough on its own and instead seems to implement the prompt it got in all it's complexity (explicit or hallucinated.) That's what (most) humans do: break down the problem into something you can grasp easily and then code it. If I do this with an LLM it breaks it down then hallucibloats each phase anyway and it still messes up.I was checking this morning if I could have Claude rewrite a bloated plugin to reduce features by just deleting what I don't need, and with that reduce complexity, in code but also at runtime. It gave me 40 options to remove, eliminating about 140k lines of code, and 6 features to keep... but then it walked back on its own analysis and said "not a good idea because this code works and is unit-tested, and we'd have to remove 350+ test cases".
Wild speculation here, since I've never coded in a functional programming language before.
But I wonder if lambda calculus can be used to procedurally simplify AI generated code in a functional language.
Again, wild speculation. I am only just starting to dip my toes into these ideas.
A purely functional language would allow you to avoid certain classes of bugs, many resulting from imperative languages allowing you to do things that are hard to read, so should help some. But relative to a human programmer, I'd guess they'd still fail to produce human quality code in terms of readability.
Readability, unlike correctness, is less of a medium of expression problem than it is an empathy and mind of origin problem.
In general it is better to constrain the LLM into what you need BEFORE you let it do things, because bot runs are expensive. So you'd want to build that into your prompt somehow.
How would I describe this to a bot in a prompt?
PS: I saw something fun (but postvalidation, so it is still no bueno) this morning that may help with PR pre-review automation: an
anti-slop linter. For example it has the nice ruleno-known-value-widening, that would destroy you if you were to do:function isUser(value: unknown): value is User { return UserSchema.safeParse(value).success; } declare const user: User; isUser(user);Which funnily, I ran into in my review of a library - about which I was complaining to k00b last week - where someone had a Fable-tagged commit refactoring their 50k line repo from javascript into typescript where all the types were
anyunless they were clearly a string orBuffer*cough*. I swear they must have one-shotted that entire refactor:/model fable-5.5-maxYo Claude convert my shit to typescript, tag a major version and push to GH. And then the CD pipeline will push your lib to npm after which 2 million dependents will use it. Especially because you push a vuln fix right after that.I can't beat that kind of retardation. All I can do is jump out of a 15th floor window.
Be careful evaluating sentiment. Popular sentiment builds most from what people want to believe and what people want to believe often isn't true.
Good Morning, been splitting firewood (a little late) to get ready for winter heating. This is elm that a neighbor gave to me from their property across the street. I use a tire to keep all the logs standing up so I can split everything into small pieces without have to constantly pick up the logs after each strike of the maul. I think if I do one wheel barrow load a day until I need to start burning wood for heat I'll have enough to last the winter. If there is any leftover I can sell it to guests staying at the yurt or tiny house for $7/bundle so they can enjoy a fire under the stars!
All your posts are a lifestyle thirst trap and make me feel like an indoor cat.
The biggest tradeoff is that I hardly ever venture further than the local bodega (5 miles away) except for the weekly Bitcoin meetup. I spend a lot of time alone with my #40hpw...
That tire was a good idea. I noticed that the steering on the car that tire came from was quite out of alignment! ahahah
this was a tire from our horse trailer, the axle broke with the horses in it about an hour away from the homestead. Not a fun experience. Now the tire remains as a reminder to accept and apply feedback, sometimes the old saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it" should be left on the shelf.
Oh! Sorry to bring back bad memories. You can tell from the tires that the axle wasn't in good condition even before it broke down. Aside from that wear on the sides, the tire seem to be in good shape. Did you have new tires on the wagon? Can the police fine you for having bald tires on a horse wagon? I never thought about that, I don't even know how it works here!
Exactly, I saw the wear and didn't accept the feedback and payed the price for the ignorance. There are two fresh axles and a new set of wheels, tires, and spare.
If the police can fine me for "bad tires" they can kiss my ass.
The tire is brilliant. I grew up somewhere that required a lot of wood chopping and never heard of anyone doing that.
I saw it a long time ago somewhere out there on the world wide web. I think it was a Finnish homesteader. since these rounds are small, I'm pretty sure it's way faster than a hydraulic log splitter.
Those Scandis have some really clever wood techniques
Here's a question for lightning gurus:
Why am I getting this message and what makes it weird? It is a Bolt12 offer.
Latest lightning error: Unknown payout error, contact [lightning@ocean.xyz](mailto:lightning@ocean.xyz)'Raw error: cln err code:209- message Timed out after after 44 attempts. We got a weird error (fee\_insufficient) for 964698x2580x1/1: disabling it for this payment.\not a lightning guru, yet the message say it clear: unknown error means it is not documented? apparently the channel has not enough inbound liquidity, or there's not a suitable route to deliver the payout. if it keeps failing, an alternative is to accumulate earnings until they reach the on-chain threshold, at which point they are paid on-chain to your Bitcoin address as a fallback if you have set one.
best you can do is to contact ocean, as suggested.
Yeah, that's what I thought. That has happened in the past, but that issue is common. The "weird" characterization threw me.
Is the SN Onion site down?
I started having problems connecting last night. This morning too.
I can connect to the regular stacker.news without TOR though.
It can be flakey given the way we deploy it. It appears to be up now.
Yes, it's working now, thanks.

Have those SN stackers who accept bitcoin payments returned to BTCpay server, or have you moved on? I will "nice try fed" my own post.
They were pretty quick on rolling out the security update, which required you do reset LND macaroons iirc.
You can link it to a Blink's custodial wallet too, (but I think Blink requires a phone number -- one of these #1567252?) if you're worried about exposing your node online.
Custodial means you're as much the next hack away from loss as on your own environment. So I don't think it offers that much additional protection: in both cases spendable balance on your receiving node is a big problem and you need to manage that precise thing, but you kind of need to do liquidity management anyway, so it's not real extra effort. In general in Bitcoin you have a rather low chance of recovering your funds from a custodian effup (plus you'll get worthless shitfiat after a decade... or 2)
You could instead use the CLINK plugin with your own lnpub, which has receive isolation through
noffer, and perhaps @06bc1a977d could explain if the plugin already works with blinded path (or explain the roadmap.)As soon as @justin_shocknet & co launch the major version they're working on, I'll be (slowly) testing a setup on a fully ingress firewalled, egress whitelisted, isolated bitcoind + LND + lnpub, funded with private channels only. If that works, it will be possible to have all this on a lean stack with btcpayserver, or just a silly little woocommerce website... anything. with no hot keys on your storefront.
I was hoping someone with more knowledge than this would give their input. Thanks for being the one.
It feels shit recommending custodied solutions, but even worse telling people to yolo a self-hosted setup now. The point you made about liquidity mgmt is really the important thing.
This sounds interesting.
You can only manage your liquidity if you run self-custodial nodes (onchain+lightning)
BTCpay server is just an interface that allows you to manage liquidity and show it to you in a sweet UI dashboard.
There are plenty of alternatives to the BTCpay server in case you lost trust in it. CLINK, LN.pub + Shockwallet is one. Just do your research and evaluate the options. Ensuring they are FOSS is a good start.
I'm still testing so don't take this as authoritative. I went through the initial phase with a bootstrapped wallet but I think it's better to skip it if you have at least some sats. My most reliable private channel partner w/ mobile LND this year has been Megalithic's small channels node, and the only thing thwarting that would be high on-chain fees.
I think you can do something similar with Alby Hub (but I've not tested that at all.)
That's a good idea as a little added security right now. I'm exploring options.
Interestingly, two fiat payment rails failed when I tried to buy a Steam game this weekend.
Buying vouchers with bitcoin worked (almost) first try. Only two things made me sad: Firstly, the platforms charging a 5% markup. And secondly, the whole voucher code reveal flow was a horrible, hot mess.
Lost count of clicks required. And one of the 2 vouchers' links didn't even work out of the box. I had to finesse my way around manually reconstructing request input params that were effed up beyond recognition by the intermediary platform.
Now that I think back about this experience, I can 100% understand the resurgence of sailing the high seas.

How the Zionist US Bankers subjugate other nations and their people
This weeks most downzapped post.

On a per capita basis US military aid to Israel is over 25 times higher than to any other nation.
This has been the case for over 80 years.
The second largest long term recipient of US military support is Egypt- where US patronage and direction of the military government closes residents in Gaza off from access to the rest of the world.
USA is complicit in Genocide.
The Ukraine war was and remains a challenge to the petrodollar empire post GFC when it became clear that China is now the dominant productive economy supporting the global economy.
https://m.stacker.news/158722
The IMF was forced to accept China onto the exclusive board of reserve currency issuers because the Yuan and China were the major pillar preventing collapse of the petrodollar empires global institutional framework and protocols.
China is still the only member of the board that is not both a monetary and military tribute state to the USA.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5Ac7ap_MAY
Iran war is the USA pushing back against Chinas growing challenge to the petrodollar. With the development of mBridge and CIP enabling Yuan denominated oil trade and that trade expanding to more and more gulf states who joined mBridge protocol.
How much fiat debt issuance has USA expended upon the Iran war?
https://m.stacker.news/158727
Would the US petrodollar be able to fund the Iran war if it operated on the Bitcoin Standard and was already $40 T in the red? No.
Iran war is last hurrah as the petrodollar empire is flogged like a dead horse by its Zionist puppet masters as they launch their Greater Israel land grab to build a regional hegemony resistant to Chinas emerging dominance.
https://m.stacker.news/158726
Bitcoin fine as a refuge - a virtual tax haven and SoV hedge against the insolvency and collapse of the petrodollar...but it does not and cannot enable you to debase all citizens savings in a war and that is a fatal strategic disadvantage for any nation state where control of territory and trade routes is fundamental to both credibility and ultimately, survival.
