The press release doesn't really have much in it beyond the headline. Here's how they describe Splistream:

Slipstream enables direct submission of Bitcoin transactions to MARA Pool, MARA’s proprietary mining pool.

Slipstream is best known for its use in submission of non-standard Bitcoin transactions (e.g. large inscriptions or non-standard formats like those used in certain BitVM bridging transactions).

Although early high-profile uses included publication of large Ordinals inscriptions in 2024, Slipstream has most recently been used for Bitcoin R&D, such as the development of Quantum Safe Bitcoin and Binohash, a technique for covenant emulation without a soft fork.

Seems like they are mostly positioning it as R&D:

Todd has been a proponent of “economically rational mempool policy,” aligning what miners will mine with the types of transactions the market demands, rather than constraining how Bitcoin is used with restrictive policies. He also maintains the view that arbitrary data is an inherent, uncensorable feature of permissionless blockchains rather than a bug to be fixed...
Referencing Slipstream’s potential for Bitcoin R&D, Todd says, “I most look forward to seeing what’s possible on Bitcoin — using Slipstream as a proving ground for experimental development and protocol innovation.”

Bitcoin works because information is easy to spread, hard to stifle,” Todd notes in a recent interview with MARA Foundation’s Isabel Foxen Duke, recalling a statement made by Satoshi Nakamoto in Bitcoin’s infancy on a foundational element of its design.

Unless of course you're a mining company that has already demonstrated a willingness to censor transactions:

Those transactions weren't prevented from getting confirmed. That's the point of the quote; a transaction only needs to reach one non-censoring miner to eventually get confirmed, and it's essentially impossible to prevent that.

Two questions:

  1. The press release summarizes Peter's views:
Todd has been a proponent of “economically rational mempool policy,” aligning what miners will mine with the types of transactions the market demands, rather than constraining how Bitcoin is used with restrictive policies. He also maintains the view that arbitrary data is an inherent, uncensorable feature of permissionless blockchains rather than a bug to be fixed.

A few years ago, Mara's spokesman:

“By excluding transactions between nefarious actors, we can provide investors and regulators with the peace of mind that the bitcoin we produce is ‘clean’, ethical and compliant with regulatory standards,” Marathon said in a statement.

Do you have any problem with Mara being involved with Slipstream?

  1. Since you agree that arbitrary data that is economically rewarding should be supported, do you see the need for lifting the 21 million cap with a tail emission, as Peter does?

I think "4-meggers" are dumb but I can't fault them for pursuing revenue. The bitcoin network supports this. We must work on improving incentives to publish transactions instead of sharing them with individual miners.

I appreciate that MARA opened up Slipstream during the Coldcard crisis, potentially saving some multisig users. That demonstrated that in a highly unusual scenario, private mempools have their place.

do you see the need for lifting the 21 million cap with a tail emission, as Peter does?

I don't think so, and I have strong doubts that issuance schedule could be changed anyway. I appreciate that Peter is not afraid to raise deeply unpopular questions. He knows a ton more about bitcoin than I do, and there is nuance everywhere, so I'll stay humble.

so what? who cares?

Next he can work on getting rid of that annoying 21 million cap.

the core chain has become an abomination

bithereum is not what's missing from the world - the world already has ethereum and it doesn't even need that

reinventing that wonky wheel isn't merely a mistake, it's the abandonment of bitcoin's mission
