While this is probably obvious to most others, I'm still somewhat surprised that reading is to listening as writing is to talking. I'm worried that we have entered a phase of humanity where nobody is very willing to read anything. Too much risk that it's slop, too much risk that you will fall behind in posting, writing, making "content", too much risk that you'll have to think hard.

I certainly feel the pressure when I spend a couple hours reading something and trying to understand it: why is it taking me so long to get this? should I just ask for a summary? shouldn't I be posting something about this? I feel that most people do not believe there are ideas or things that take a long time to understand or that are worth pondering for a long time.
