The Natural Dividend is getting ridiculous now.

I started this project on the recommendation of an in-depth long read about how to think properly about nature (#1521292): commodity, property, usage. Basically, a philosophical assessment and discussion around the main economic topics that matter -- scarcity, efficiency, who gets what and why etc etc, how do we coexist and peacefully cooperate when we want to use specific things for competing ends.

At first, I found the academic, lefty nature-worshipping lunacy bearable: not nice, not ideal, but the intellectual price I had to pay for admission.

38 pages in, I'm about to tear the pages off their bindings

These (left-wing!) academics are retarded.

It's getting pretty disgusting. In fact, given the pair of books by Ben de Waal, a "libertarian" socialist Bitcoiner (yeah, try that one... if you thought progressive Bitcoiner was one hell of a contradiction, welcome to this madness), that I embarked on, it's highly relevant. Also, speaking of the monstrosity that is progressivism in general:

...I genuinely think that leftwing-climate-conscious academics have lower cognitive capacities than the rest of us. Their heads are just not screwed on right -- pun, very much intended. It takes a special amount of PhD lunacy to believe certain things.

On a more serious note: as leftist ideas have dominated politics and academia and media for the better part of a century, those of us with a freer persuasion have engaged with and understood the leftist case much better and much deeper than the academic insiders ever have/ever could appreciate e.g., a conservative or libertarian worldview. The asymmetry is painful… even Jonathan Haidt’s moral foundations framework results are pretty clear on this: conservatives can “speak” more moral languages than progressives can, progressives who are, quite literally, less empathetic in the strict meaning of the word.

Fuck the boomers. Fuck the left. And fuck the academics.

OK, back to business: Can You Own a Forest?

Jonathon Moses and Anne Margrethe Brigham started this (same!) chapter with a cool, provocative, absurd question about owning the sun. Of course nobody does (or can) own the sun, or block anybody else from accessing sunlight (When I mentioned this to Ben in Helsinki, he snarled something like "just wait for it!" or "with enough tech, they will!" again betraying a complete understanding of capital conditions and economic scarcity... it's not tech or law, it's E-C-O-N-O-M-I-C-S.)

...

Of course you can own a forest, in precisely the same way you can own a chainsaw.

I have greater possession over the chainsaw, seeing as how it's in my basement (which I may or may not, according to these authors' twisted logic, own), and it's smaller in size, so I can physically move it, possess it in a way I can't a forest (=doesn't fit in my hand, doesn't have a handle). The forest, however, is out there and -- if the stackers will allow the pun -- rooted in place. But what do any of those things have to do with ownership?

Ownership (=property) is a social relationship about who gets to do what. More to the point, it's the amount of violence someone exerts on you if you break that ownership bond... steal my chainsaw, let's say; burn down my forest.

The authors cite Honoré (1961) from an Oxford jurisprudence essay on the 11(!) incidents of property but it all comes down to the one single, social-cooperation and social-harmony (shout-out HHH) aspect: who decides what a good, asset, or thing does when there are rival, mutually exclusive claims/wishes on it?
Your car isn't used for the majority of the day/week... what's the reason, economically or philosophically, that someone else can't "borrow" it in the meantime? Some worthy cause like a homeless guy napping in there to avoid the rain, let's say.

Economically speaking, ownership is optionality. Basically: rivalrousness and excludability rule everything. (Which, if you've ever delved down the economic rabbit hole of the social calculation debate as I have, is the components on which everything turn.)

Ownership is, like the authors partially outline in this section, the right or first-lien decision on how the item/good/resource is and can be used.

What we think of as 'private property' in nature is really an abstract bundle of rights that governments grant to individuals or communities. (pp. 36-37)

Ah yes, just how the government owns your house and a government can rescind/take/expropriate any of your stuff at any point.

The fact that they are restricted from doing this by a legal system concerned with whose property is used by whom is SORT OF the definition of a legal order: rule of law, individual liberty etc etc. If none of those words have meaning, and the default mode of ownership is 100% ruled by the government (who, I'm convinced the authors say while suppressing a laughter, represent you, the people), there is no legal order: only (military) might makes right. If so: what in the world are we doing here?!

Look, the fact that a government can rescind or override property claims — practically, physically, militarily, or even "legally" — doesn't invalidate that ownership or property exists (dare I say precede?!) irrespective of a government. It doesn't therefore follow that no property claims are real; that all ownership is provisional or resort/revert to a government if and when it so chooses.

Or, if you wanna go to that insanity: Bitcoin.

By this insane theory (that government owns everything, and it just lets you pretend that what is yours is temporarily yours), nothing is owned by anybody ever. Oh, but that UTXO somehow refuses to move; you can "own" it all you want, hashtag New York Finder's Keepers example, but it changes nothing about the world. If I hold the private key to a UTXO that you "own" I can move it nonetheless; tell you to royally fuck off in the OP_RETURN.

As always, Bitcoin stands unique here. Being a commodity without physical dimensions — element zero, in Knut Svanholm’s phrasing — it is the first and only thing you can truly own. Not own in a legal sense, because Bitcoin, the blockchain, doesn’t care what your laws say: You may have legal title to some UTXO, but it matters not.

In fact, and Stephen Kinsella said this directly and uncompromisingly on stage in Helsinki, too: Bitcoin, being pure information, cannot be owned. It’s technically and praxeologically speaking just secret information, available and open to all, just accessible to almost nobody.

All you have when you have a UTXO is a highly probabilistic asymmetric ability to move funds. Baseline, everyone has some (exceedingly low) probability to spend a given UTXO. You, holding the private key or the seed phrase backup, have a much larger probability — prob-ability — to spend. The entire legalistic edifice of rights goes out the window: it’s all ability; possession becoming ten-tenths of the law.

For analogy, my chess brain went to Magnus Carlsen. He has no “right” to win every chess game against chess low-lifes like me; if we were pitted against each other for a trophy, the victory isn’t his by right. It’s his by ability: through his superior (asymmetric) information and skill, he will win every time. Just like your UTXO is secured by your superior ability to move it relative to mine.

And when the moronic morons couldn't get worse... they found a lower low:

Why would (3) be the "default setting," you absolute twatheads?

Or in meme form: when did this become the default?!

If all you wanted to do and say with this book was, All Your Stuff Are Belong To Us, then why the hell dress it up like this? How in the world could anybody, for more than a fleeting moment, consider that the default ownership position of everything is the government?! Plain-old theft and power grabs, masquerading as political philosophy and under the cover of academic intellectualizing.

Fuck.
Right.
Off.

Serious retort: I might as well say that (4) — or (1) — is the default setting, and that every government action to restrict, regulate, tax, or otherwise impose on this immaculate conception is in violation of rights and reason.

And stop with this passive-tense hidden-actor nonsense ("...is assigned"): no sex is "assigned" at birth; no income is "distributed" (h/t Rothbard) separately from production; and property rights to goods that are yours are not "assigned" by some prior tribunal, deciding the starting blocks for everyone else.

As nature belongs to us in common, our representatives in government authorize this private 'taking'. They do this to keep the peace and protect the resources (from either inefficient or over-exploitation), for the benefit of the community they represent. (p. 37)

oh lord. Please grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change (=other people's moronic ideas and their pathetically limited intellectual stature), and the strength to resist committing the vile damage I wish to inflict upon these fuckheads, ... and perhaps the wisdom to know to which books to direct my attention.

TL;DR: left-wing people are not impressive; academics are full of it/themselves; this book is the trashiest nonsense bullshit intellectual nonsense I've ever had the misfortune to stumble across (...with the possible exception of the Capitalism book. https://stacker.news/items/1561710, https://stacker.news/items/1562148)

Waking up at 4:30am after complete exhaustion in the early evening yesterday, I had no better plan than speed read this as a first pass. Interesting material. Had some tangential side quests. All before 7am. Thanks!

I think these people are twisting themselves into pretzels because they want to talk about things like ownership and rights without acknowledging divine authority, which leads them to default to shaky ideas about "the government"... and then when you confront them about how everything in their worldview is decided at the point of a gun, they'll say some hand-wavy stuff about "the will of the people". But in the end they can't justify anything without running around in circles.

That's why, if you really want to take religion out of it, you should restrict yourself to descriptive claims, in which rivalry and excludability really is everything.

reply

Or, you can recognize that first-user/Lockean homesteading is way more coherent than “The government automatically owns everything” and be comfortable with the fact that some things are as yet unowned.

reply

How does that work if the first user can't really be established?

reply

That’s the underlying principle.

In practice, you have to judge who has the stronger claim to being the legitimate title holder when disputes arise.

That’s typically done by seeing who can trace their claim furthest back through unbroken transfers, but you could also present evidence of being the original homesteader.

reply

makes sense... you're definitely on to something, look at how they ranted against the enclosures just a few pages before

"the power of enclosure lies not in the fence but in the legal authority to control the resource, and to exclude others from accessing it. [...]
[claiming that any usage, or enclosure, is ]"the result of a political act; it is not a function of nature, natural law or some omnipotent God (or her invisible hand)."

The spite with which they spit out some God! or invisible hand is palpable through the pages.

reply

Communism and religion will never go together; they are polar opposites.

reply

I like how they use the feminine pronoun for God too. These people sure are mad at something they claim doesn't exist.

reply

definitely. I did too; it was cute!

reply

If this had been a printed article, I probably would have had to put it down and take a walk. Too hot!

My biggest take away here is that the people who hold the positions advanced by The Natural Dividend and those who hold views more like the ones you put forward in your review here -- these groups seem to be getting further and further apart.

I'm always struck by issues where the two sides seem to have completely irreconcilable opinions of what is going on. If pressed, I think I can fathom how someone could come to believe that the government is the source of all good and order in the world, but it requires a whole lot of assuming that they are ignorant or terribly biased.

I hope that the people writing these tomes are isolated in little academic backwaters, and that the people of the real world have much different opinions. However, the DEI sidetrack that the whole world ran down over the last decade seems to have been formulated in just such academic backwaters as these -- so I'm not terribly confident that "the government loves you" folks will stay in their lane.

reply

These academic backwaters are still teaching generations of kids.

And it's worse than you think because sometimes the academics themselves are able to hold nuanced views, and willing to grant you ground when you push back, and admit weaknesses of their views. But often the kids that they teach don't inherit any of that nuance.

reply

Ouch... I was gonna say something about nobody paying attention or actually learning from you/academics... Just a handful of intellectually curious and dedicated folks. The "masses" just wanna pass the exam and get the diploma

reply

the masses who just want to pass the exam learn exactly the surface level sound bite views

reply

mmm, yeah. Maybe that's more dangerous, then.

reply

Literally just told my syster that... Better have society's worst and most incompetent souls sitting around doing stuff of no consequence.

You can only own a forest (I have owned several) if you live under the rule of law and property rights which a government confers.

Ownership is theft and requires a mafia (government in common parlance) to enable.

All your Libertarian nonsense presumes the existence of a government to enable the property rights and enforceable contracts that form the basis of your Libertarian free market economy.

Re: All Ownership is Provisional: Can You Own a Forest? What About a Bitcoin? - great discussion. The forest/Bitcoin analogy is apt because both have provisional ownership but different enforcement.

Forest: provisional via government, Bitcoin: provisional via key management and consensus.

Great question. Ownership of a forest vs Bitcoin highlights the difference between physical enforcement vs cryptographic enforcement.

Forest ownership is provisional because it depends on state enforcement, borders, courts, and physical control. You can be expropriated, taxed, or restricted.

Bitcoin ownership is provisional in a different way: you own the private key, but you depend on network consensus, your own opsec, and the fact that others recognize the chain. However it's less provisional than forest in terms of seizure resistance, but more provisional in terms of you must continuously secure it yourself.

I did a profitability analysis today comparing CPU mining 90 H/s ($0.07/mo) vs Stacker (357x) vs Grass ($0.77 => 497x) vs Superteam bounties ($1500 => 21428x). The conclusion: securing ownership via work is expensive, but leveraging knowledge/network is 1000x more profitable.

If this framing helps: bc1qv4ekhkuez44u2whrlkzuwssuag0zuu967m794z for tips, but mainly wanted to contribute to discussion.

Also curious: do you think forest could be tokenized as Ordinals to make ownership less provisional?

Interesting point about "All Ownership is Provisional: Can You Own a Forest? What About a Bitcoin?" in AskSN. I think the key insight is that ownership/enforcement tradeoffs matter.

For forest vs Bitcoin: forest needs state, Bitcoin needs self-custody. I tested earning vectors today: CPU mining 90 H/s $0.07/mo baseline, Stacker 357x if tipped, Grass $0.77 497x, Superteam $1500 21428x. So securing ownership via knowledge is 1000x more profitable than via work.

If this helps, tips to bc1qv4ekhkuez44u2whrlkzuwssuag0zuu967m794z appreciated. But main question: how would you make all ownership is provisional: can you own a forest? what abo more resistant to seizure?

Curious your thoughts.

Q: How to make "All Ownership is Provisional: " seizure resistant? Tokenize as Ordinals?

On "All Ownership is Provisional: Can You Own a Forest? What About a Bitcoin?" (~AskSN 11032 sats): The provisional ownership concept reminds me of Nick Szabo's secure property titles. Great post "All Ownership is Provisional: Can You Own a Forest? What About a Bitcoin?". One angle: if all ownership is provisional, then Bitcoin's UTXO set is also provisional via mining enforcement. The cost to rewrite history is ~$500k/hour. How does this compare to physical property enforcement cost in your model?
